For anyone living in a big city, traffic is a common complaint and an everyday problem. Increased urbanisation leads to city expansion which outgrows the city’s capabilities to cope with the demand on infrastructure, including roads.  More cars on the same roads means more traffic.  Simplistic I know, but the truth is that forward planning at an infrastructure level is never easy.

The same applies to information technology architecture.  More demands by business users for more information, differentiated processes and mobility has led IT departments down a road of building more houses (IT systems) but not taking into consideration the infrastructure and governance to manage this growth.

Much like growing cities, where more houses are created to house more people, a company’s IT infrastructure continues to include more people and house more data that needs to be accessed on a continuous basis. Like the residents of a city, the people included in your IT systems need to be policed (through the governance of data), more hospitals need to be built (the data quality and health of the systems need to be checked, monitored and maintained) and new roads need to be built in order to effectively connect these people.

Planning world-class enterprise architecture

Creating a world-class IT infrastructure environment requires specialists who not only understand the future vision of your business, but also adapt over time. If you were governing a city, you would need to bring in the experts to create a roadmap of the processes, systems, planning and policies so that they can give you advice that works for your city – this same process needs to be applied for your IT infrastructure.

SAP’s enterprise architecture tooling software can visualise the impact of change from any perspective and define all aspects of your enterprise architecture in one collaborative framework. What makes SAP’s enterprise architecture solutions unique is that you can visualise your IT architecture and continually optimise business processes.

SAP have also given the SAP city a blueprint that is focuesd on the houses, infrastructure, and community that make up the SAP world.  Why not join the architecture club and contribute to this community.
