Martin Kopp, SAP VP Healthcare talks about the birth of The Innovation Coalition and how SAP’s expertise is helping defeat virulent disease by providing end-to-end solutions.

The Global Fund was established to fight the three biggest threats to global health – Malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV AIDs. It’s heavily-funded – the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation have donated $1.4B alone. So, in my role heading up SAP’s global healthcare strategy, I wondered how else we could help solve some of the world’s health problems, besides money. While I was in Vietnam in February, the idea of The Innovation Coalition was sprung - how about if leaders from different sectors - Life Sciences, Insurance, Banking, Telcos, etc. - work together with the Global Fund to determine end-to-end solutions for difficult healthcare problems, how about fighting disease with collective knowledge?

For example, in Vietnam, the local healthcare authorities have the drugs to deal with HIV, but don’t have a supply chain that enables distribution of the necessary drugs to patients on time. If a patient misses their treatment, the disease can progress, and they have to move onto a much more expensive drug that the local healthcare authorities can’t always afford. A working supply chain, especially for vaccines that need refrigeration, is something easy for SAP to provide which can provide real benefits on the ground.

Similarly, our mobility and visualization technology can be vital to disease control. With it in place, someone can, for example, text from a cheap mobile in a remote Nigerian location, reporting a Malaria outbreak. Our mobility solutions and data platform can aggregate this and other reports in real time to provide a live global map of the disease – showing where efforts would best be employed to fight it.

The Innovation Coalition was unveiled the first week of December at The Global Fund’s two-day replenishment meeting in Washington DC to mark World AIDS Day hosted by the United States Government.  The Innovation Coalition is designed to be a WIN-WIN-WIN-WIN-WIN public private partnership because it has the aim to generate value for all stakeholders:

  1. People living with disease, and their communities, by making their lives better,
  2. “In country” implementers of The Global Fund programs by helping them manage their projects,
  3. Recipient countries by granting them access to resources that can help address their issues,
  4. Donors by ensuring value for money,
  5. Private Sector companies by driving innovation and scale but also fulfilling their humanitarian commitments and goals.

Currently, together with USAID and GMS, SAP is already helping “in country” implementers of Global Fund monies to strengthen grants oversight and management to increase performance.

Every problem, and all the associated data, is part of a puzzle, where the solution brings good health – and SAP is perfectly positioned to use its technology capabilities and innovations to find the most effective pieces to put these puzzles together.  But it is only through collaboration and partnership that we will eradicate these diseases, save lives and be the generation known for creating an AIDS free world.
