jose.nunes is a software developer and entrepreneur, and the SCN Member of the Month for September, 2015. He runs his own mobility company, Tec4mobi, and is a strong presence in the Portuguese spaces on SCN. In addition to answering questions, José helps build the bridge between SCN and SAP events, most recently helping organize the SAP Inside Track in São Leopoldo, Brazil. José is hard-working and determined - on top of finding time to run his own business and contribute on SCN, he is an avid Randonneur long-distance cyclist, consistently challenging himself to improve.

Some tidbits from our talk:

  • José agrees with sven.ringling, that the question can teach you as much as the answer
  • He finds SAP Inside Track to be like a live version of SCN
  • If you're going to SAP TechEd in Las Vegas, look for him at the Inside Blind concert
  • He shared his favorite beers to drink after a long bike ride...watch to the end of the video to hear all three!

Tell us a bit about yourself, where you live, what kind of work you do, and other things you would like to share with the community (hobbies, fun facts)?
I’m José Nunes, born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, where I live together with my wife Mônica.

I started playing with computers when I was 9 years old and never stopped since then. First, it was only the challenge of being able to write or draw something. Later, playing games, mostly Quake. Later, my brother started learning about software development and he encouraged me to do the same.  He taught me what a compiler was, how it worked and all that kind of basic stuff. That was enough to fall in love for software development.

When it comes down to SAP world, my first project was to develop a POS system using .Net, fully integrated with an SAP ERP backend. After that, I’ve learned some ABAP and started working as ABAP developer. The journey didn`t end here, as I kept working with other SAP technologies, like Business Connector, WDJ (early 2005), XI/PI and lots of integration projects. Now I`m working hard to deliver the best mobility experience to my customers.

While I’m not working, I like to hop on my bike and ride around the city, specially at night with my friends, or hit the road for a longer training session. I’m also a Randonneur, AKA long-distance cyclist – (See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randonneuring). The aim is to complete the course within specified time limit. The course ranges from 200km (120mi) to 1400km(870mi). It is quite challenging, physically but mostly mentally. The next brevet that I`ll ride will be a 200km starting at Boituva-SP on Sep. 12th (here is the course and the altimetry profile http://ridewithgps.com/routes/9912829 ).

Last but not least, another passion of my life is beer. It is a huge universe, lots of possible ingredients, methods and ways of brewing. From lagers to ales, I’m in. Lambics? Sure!

The one who inspired me to take a deep dive into the beer world was Michael Jackson. No no no, not the singer. This one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson_(writer) - He was the “Beer Hunter”. My next step on this area will be brewing my own beer until the end of this year 😉

When did you become a member of SCN and which areas are you most active in?
I became member of SCN in 2004, as soon as I started working with SAP. Currently I`m more active on SPED & NF-e and Comunidade SAP em Português (Portuguese Language Community), but I used to participate on PI/XI community as well.

What motivates you to keep coming back to SCN and help members find answers to their questions?

I want to help people, share knowledge and learn. This is my driver. Also, I agree with sven.ringling phrase on his MoM interview: You can learn from questions just as much as from answers.

I see you helped organize the SAP Inside Track in São Leopoldo? Tell us about that experience.

The event itself is amazing, like “live SCN” – instead of a blog post or document, you have a keynote. You leave your comment, talk to people just like you, have a great networking opportunity.

Being part of a team that deliver such rich event is delightful. My role (with the indispensable help from Bruno Lucattelli and Tobias Hoffman) is mainly the recording of the sessions and live streaming the event. This way we can reach more people, anytime, anywhere. SIT experience to the next level 🙂

Looks like you are headed to SAP TechEd in Las Vegas. What are you looking forward to the most? (I hope you’ll connect with Mustafa, last month’s Member of the Month, while you’re there)

What I’m looking forward to the most? Third Eye Blind concert, of course! Just kidding. It is a good opportunity to sharpen your saw/axe/whatever - http://blog.codinghorror.com/sharpening-the-saw/

I didn’t have time yet to review all the sessions, but definitely I’m looking forward to join the hands-on sessions on Mobile topic and try to attend as much Mobile lectures I can.

As I’m a ABAP developer and a system integrator, for sure I`ll check out the roadmap lectures on Process Orchestration/HCI and ABAP on HANA.

And yes, looking forward to meet and talk to you guys in person.

Is there an SCN member you admire (OK… you can name a few)? And for what reason?
thomas.jung/profile was one of the first remarkable people that I knew here. He had a lot of blogs about WDJ when I was starting with WDJ and he helped me in so many ways. And he's still one of the top contributors. Quite impressive.

stefan.grube michal.krawczyk2 and shabarish.vijayakumar for their contributions in the PI/XI area, always helpful.

henrique.pinto, because he made it possible to have a Portuguese community within SCN, not to mention his contributions in other areas, like HANA.

marcelo.ramos, one of the first person I've met that spread the SDN/SCN word.
