Join the discussion on why Big Data matters to the aerospace industry and discover what we have showcased on our Big Data Truck at this year´s Farnborough International Airshow

On January 1, 1914, Abram C. Pheil, former mayor of St.Petersburg, Florida, made a decision that would mark the birth of the global airline industry – to become the first ever paying passenger on a commercial flight which ended up in a 23-minute journey across the bay from St. Petersburg to Tampa, Florida.

Since that historic moment 100 years ago, commercial aviation has transformed the world. Today, over three billion passengers and 50 million tons of cargo reach their destination through the wonder of flight every year, supporting over 57 million jobs and $2.2 trillion in economic activity.

The demand for commercial aircraft is at an all-time high and defense priorities are changing. Airline and defense customers are expecting more for less, including more capable, cost-effective and reliable products to better serve the customers. With all these changes aerospace and defense companies are looking to establish new service based business models based on connected and digital equipment. Furthermore, the industry is entering an era of rapidly changing demographics, where long-time engineers are being replaced by the millennial generation. (Image source: IATA.org)

SAP Big Data Truck to exhibit at Farnborough International Airshow

This year, for the first time, we’ll be taking our big data experts to Farnborough International Airshow from July 14-16 to demonstrate how aerospace and defense organisations can harness the potential of big data to innovate, simplify work, help attract new clients and increase profits.

The aviation industry is ripe for innovation in the form of Big Data and in-memory technology. Aircraft create significant amounts of data during operation, which can, and should, be analysed to increase operational efficiencies, allow proactive maintenance, and ultimately, save industry players time and money – whether they are flying passengers over the Atlantic, seeking to engineer cutting-edge parts, or striving for an efficient supply-chain.

Nils Herzberg, Senior Vice President Global Head of Discrete Industries at SAP said, “The Aerospace and Defense industry is being driven by data, and with some of the innovations coming down the line, this is only going to escalate. We’re always looking for innovative and unconventional ways to reach out to our customers and connect with new user-groups in order to show them how they can extract value from that data and tap into its full potential. This is why - for the first year – we are taking the Big Data truck to our customers’ most important and respected industry event.”

The SAP Big Data platform, applications, analytics, and services can help deliver real business value from the data that is being generated from these operations in real-time. At the show, we’ll be demonstrating this through the SAP Big Data Truck, which will host a number of demo showcases and innovative use-cases which provide real examples of how we’re working with organisations across all industries to harness the power of their data. Examples include equipment health monitoring, understanding why the German soccer team is a world leader in strategy and speed, and viewing an airline operations crew recovery process.

“We are very excited to welcome everyone on board our Big Data Truck at Farnborough International Airshow next week,” said Magnus Bjorendahl, vice president and global head of Aerospace & Defense at SAP. “Big Data is widely talked about within the industry, so I’m pleased to be able to bring it to life with hands-on demo showcases, and it gives us the opportunity to engage with prospects, customers and partners. Being able to support these aerospace and defense organisations in gaining valuable insights from data to help transform their business, and indeed the wider world, is truly exciting.”

The cloud is not the limit at SAP – it is just the beginning!
