SAP Guidelines for Best-Built Applications is now in its 3rd year and our content: official SAP guidelines for developing complementary applications for SAP Business Suite, constantly grew and matured through the publication of new and revision of older topic chapters. Therefore, it is always good to have a fresh look at the latest new version published on the http://bestbuiltaps.sap.com web site. For SAP TechEd 2011 we just added previews of upcoming SAP NetWeaver Gateway and Mobile chapters in the pdf version of the BBA book.
Our audiences are SAP’s customers and partners who undertake developments for SAP business application environments. Every few month, at major SAP conferences, the BBA team is looking forward to meet with our readers personally. We like your feedback to all aspects of BBA, but mostly we are interested in how you are using our or also your own guidelines to govern your development activities.
I recently read some interesting SDN blogs about coding which was written to fulfill functional requirements, was done quickly to meet timelines and budget, even passed formal QA, performance and acceptance tests, only so that it was found later, as the developer already left the project, that the code is hard to maintain and to operate over time. A lot of pain and unplanned, TCO driving extra costs are caused this way.
By the way: there is now a “Best-Built Applications” SDN blog tag available and also a BBA Forum besides the other BBA resources which are on our web site. It is easy to find BBA content on SDN and please feel encouraged to post your own experiences with BBA and development governance on SDN!
I think it is undisputed that sound development governance according to guidelines which look beyond feature/function is absolutely necessary, but, unfortunately it is not easy to enforce it. BBA is meant to help by covering all topics which influence the success of development in the long run. BBA authors use decades of experience, which SAP has itself building business applications, and they consider future usefulness of developments by following principles like “Timeless Software” (Vishal Sikka) and SAP’s On-Premise, On-Demand, On-Device strategy.
