Data visualization is a general term that describes any effort to help people understand the significance of data by placing it in a visual context. Patterns, trends and correlations that might go undetected in text-based data can be exposed and recognized more easily with data visualization software.

Data Visualization might be considered a relatively modern development but the graphic representation of quantitative information has a long history. Some of the original seeds of visualization arose from tables depicting the positions of stars and other celestial bodies, and in the making of maps to aid in navigation and exploration. For example, the idea of coordinates was used by ancient Egyptian surveyors in laying out towns as well as other earthly and heavenly positions.

In today’s world organizations are under pressure to adjust business strategies and tactics to fast-changing markets and economic situations, and they are depending on Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics to help them make good decisions. They are seeking tools that help their business users get quick access to data discovery and advanced data visualization capabilities which are easy to use, tell the story graphically, and avoid IT bottlenecks so users can unearth relevant insights in a timely manner.

These digitally aware organizations are seeking to arm frontline workers with data-driven insights to increase business agility and gain a competitive advantage.

Accordingly, independent software vendors (ISVs) that want to remain relevant and expand must overcome the challenges of data growth and meet customer expectations by delivering agile BI through their applications.

So, how do ISVs separate out the best "advanced" data visualization products? In the Forrester Wave™: Agile Business Intelligence Platforms, Q3 2015 report by analyst Boris Evelson, 13 agile BI providers are reviewed for their strategy, market presence and offering – including how well they stack up across key agile BI requirements:

  • Empowering business users to be self-sufficient

  • Helping business users get more insights through effective data visualizations

  • Empowering application development and delivery professionals

SAP was one of the 13 agile business intelligence providers reviewed as part of the report and was cited as having solution options which enable the “start small, think big” approach — one of BI deployment’s best practices. Central to SAPs agile BI offering is SAP BusinessObjects Lumira, data visualization software that makes it easy to create beautiful and interactive maps, charts, and infographics and integrate them into applications with a simple URL based OpenDocument interface.
