I attended ASUG Annual Conference, co-located with SAPPHIRENOW.  Due to illness, I never made it to the SAPPHIRENOW show floor.  I only attended ASUG education sessions.  As an ASUG Volunteer, I place the ASUG education sessions at a higher priority; no marketing, and getting to hear customer stories.

First, if you missed this year, consider attending next year when ASUG Annual Conference will be May 5-7th

Understand your Requirements to Pick the Right BI Tool

Slides are here if you are interested.

When selecting the right BI tool, your role is to listen to the requirements, not suggest a tool.

Understand your audience - are they analysts, decision makers, or consumers?  Why attend conferences?  Why join a user group like ASUG?  It helps you understand the SAP BI portfolio and strategic direction.

The other part of this is monitoring your users.  During this session SAP asked, "who has statistics turned on in BW"?  Almost every hand was raised.  Next question - who has auditing turned on in their BI Platform?  Fewer hands were raised.  It is important to monitor what your users are doing.

Above shows some common obstacles to finding the right BI tool.  You can't simply work with just one tool and misunderstandings of capabilities of the solution are some of the common obstacles.  As an example, comparing how BW hierarchies work in the different tools.

The comment on this slide was you can "go some where but not come back" when it comes to the Report-to-Report Interface (a common question here on SCN).

I liked the comparison of the above chart (pre Lumira 1.17).  Coming with SAP BusinessObjects Lumira bar charts are now supported.

The above compares the Mobile BI requirements with the products.  A common question is offline support, scheduling and broadcasting.

What tools are used are used by those who create the reports?  You can see that IT/Designer uses more complex tools to create the reports.

Who consumes which tool?  Notice that IT / Designer does not consume reports.

More to come.
