When I presented BRFplus on TechEd last year, there were many questions around the combination of BRFplus and SAP Business Workflow (BWF). BWF is very well established in the SAP community. and BWF experts know how to use it very efficiently to set up new processes. However, points of criticism have always been performance and the very limited capabilities with regard to rule modeling.

My TechEd audience of course did not need much time to comprehend that the power of combining BWF with BRFplus capabilities would not only overcome the limitations of BWF, but also widen the space for workflow applications in general. Even existing workflows could provide break-outs to call into BRFplus and automate some of the formerly manually processed logic with business rules.

As a rule of thumb, you use business rules to express business logic of any form (calculations, validations, decisioning, defaulting, mapping, …). As long as you can define the logic to be executed as one synchronously called business rule service, you would of course use BRFplus. The domain of the workflows is action and task processing. In BWF, you find capabilities to interrupt a process and wait for certain events to happen as a pre-requisite to continue.

At TechEd, I could not yet show a live demo. Instead I only had to show some half-complete examples in one of our development systems. With NW 7.0 Enhancement Package 2 Support Package 6, the developments have been released and are generally available today.

We have recently uploaded a paper to SDN about BRFplus and BWF. Nearly all credits go to Csaba Korényi for his great effort to build the example. The paper shows an example with all steps, many screenshots, and detailed explanations. You can find it in the Business Rule Framework plus.

You should already mark your calendar for the ASUG webinar about BRFplus and BWF on 7th of June, 2011. Csaba and I will show you BRFplus and BWF in action. For more details please visit the event details page.

More information about BRFplus can be found in the new BRFplus book BRFplus – Business Rule Management for ABAP Applications.
