We’re seeing a lot of customer momentum in adopting International Business Communication Standards (IBCS) for their reporting, dashboarding, and data visualizations. Like the chief financial officer of Editorial Prensa Iberica explains in this video, they’re adopting IBCS standards in order to drive alignment, shorten implementation time, and improve outcomes. And of course, our SAP Board adopted IBCS standards in our own financial reporting back in 2011.
To understand why IBCS can make such an impact on your business—step back for a moment and imagine if every composer from Mozart to Beethoven used a different notation system. How would conductors and musicians be able to interpret the music in a moment without standardized notation? So many professions like engineering use a notation system and set out standards for communicating their vast amounts of information clearly and quickly.
Yet in business, there is a plethora of ways to layout out business reports and dashboards and within even a single company you will find forecast data or averages defined and displayed differently. Imagine, instead, if we had pattern recognition that allowed us to immediately understand the context? That is the essence of IBCS.

So What Are Your Options for Adopting IBCS Standards within Your SAP Deployment?
Your first option is our newest offering. While not yet certified to be compliant with IBCS international standards, it is being designed natively into the product and will undergo certification. In the videos above you heard from our VP of Analytics Product Management, Jurgen Hagedorn, on why he is a supporter of IBCS standards and is building these natively in SAP Cloud for Analytics. Find out more about this cloud analytics platform that will bring together planning, visualizations, predictive and governance into one solution.
Your option for implementing IBCS standards within other parts of the SAP analytics portfolio lies with our partner graphomate, which you’ll find in the SAP store. In this short video, you’ll also hear from Lars Schubert, founder and CEO of graphomate, who specializes in data visualization and creates beautiful, simple-to-use add-ons for SAP Design Studio and SAP Lumira that allow you to create visualizations instantly following IBCS standards. You can see some short 1-2 minute demos of graphomate in action in these videos on their tables and charts.
If you’re interested in learning more about IBCS —think about joining the IBCS annual conference in June and meeting other companies who are adopting business communication standards. It is an open association where you can participate in the discussions.
