Santa in lab coat

Dear Santa,

There’s only one thing on my list this year, but it’s important. Even if you ignore everyone else’s list and just fulfill mine, you will bring joy to all because this gift would serve 7 billion boys and girls -- plus their parents and grandparents.

Bonus: You’ll get extra time with Mrs. Claus!

All I want for Christmas is your help with building a new healthcare system for all the countries around the world!  That’s it.

Your healthcare system at the North Pole runs magically well, I imagine. But there are some big issues that we need to figure out in order to keep all the boys and girls around the world healthy and happy.

Since you are really more of an expert in toy making, I’ll share some of the organizational issues the rest of the world is having. Then you’ll know what to fix.

Operational Efficiency

Your elves can process so many requests from around the world that I’m sure they can help save the many healthcare systems that are simply not able to run at their best. Their issues include:

  • Lack of visibility into financial, clinical and operational functions to improve cost-effectiveness
  • Cost pressures from parents and grandparents that are aging, unemployed & uninsured
  • Need to optimize resources in alignment with care delivery

Collaborative Care Delivery

It’s impressive how the reindeer, elves and all of your helpers at the North Pole collaborate so seamlessly. Here, again, the world’s healthcare systems are having trouble working with local governments, laws, insurance companies and businesses in order to provide best in class care to patients. Their issues include:

  • Demand for insights into care delivery and outcomes
  • Increasing need for preventative care and care outside the hospitals
  • Capability for real-time, data driven treatment and care anytime, anywhere

Rising Patient Expectations

Your extraordinary ability to keep up with the demands of boys and girls around the world, especially as their lists get longer every year, would be a tremendous asset to our planet’s healthcare systems.  Issues here include:

  • More informed patients demanding transparency and a better healthcare experience
  • Increasing importance of self-care
  • Demand for sharing of healthcare information for holistic, personalized care

Solving these problems will be incredibly complex because each country has different laws and systems in place. There may even be different systems within some countries.

Show Me the Data

The global healthcare industry generates 30 percent of the world’s data, according to the Bridgehead Software 2011 International Healthcare Data Management Survey. And 80 percent of healthcare providers consider it critical to have access to the right information at the right time to support decision making analysis or planning requirements.

But 26 percent indicate they don’t have the information they need.

Let’s help these healthcare providers make better decisions by giving them the ability to turn their data into usable, real-time information in order to drive more value for patients.

Running Simple, Beyond Time and Space

Solving all this can get complex very quickly. We need to remove the barriers of time and space between the patient, the doctors and the healthcare administrators. You seem especially adept at circumventing time and space, Santa, which is why I think you are the right person to help solve this!

If you can’t deliver this gift by Christmas, would you please let us know how you do it all? What kind of technology do you use to keep your healthcare system and toy factory running smoothly? Have you moved your organization to the cloud? How do you manage your big data requirements in real time? Do you use SAP HANA? Who helped you get up and running? Did you work with SAP Services? Your answers to some of these questions would be so helpful!

After this letter, I’ll still understand if on Dec. 24 you pack up your toys and have Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer guide your sleigh on that foggy evening to deliver toys to all the boys and girls around the world. I understand there are many who will be waiting for you. In the meantime the rest of the world needs to put more thought into how to update our healthcare systems so that they run as efficiently, seamlessly and magically as yours.

Merry Christmas,

@SylviaSant

P.S. If we’re not getting new healthcare systems, I'd like a MacBook Air. --S
