As with so many other tasks we perform in our day-to-day lives, from purchasing airline tickets, to depositing a check, enterprise software is undergoing a dramatic change: It is beginning to reflect the way we actually live and work.

Those of us who work with enterprise software have, for years, accepted the world as it is, with no question as to why it is complex to navigate and time-consuming to manage.

Let’s say you’re a sales executive. Day-to-day, you’re in CRM, you’re in the finance system and maybe also HR.  But you’re also on your phone, checking email and calendar, using maps. In a traditional environment, you’d jump from system to system, each with a different look and feel, navigating an unfamiliar interface to find the small piece of functionality you actually need.

With SAP Fiori, we’re changing that traditional enterprise user experience. Instead of transactions and end-to-end business processes, the SAP Fiori concept is centered on people and their goals.

As a sales executive or any other professional, your traditional environment would be transformed into a personalized, simple and consistent experience that presents you with only the functionality needed to accomplish your tasks. It’s similar to the mobile consumer experience, where there are lots apps to choose from, but you pick only what matters to you and can always change according to your needs.

Think of it as walking into a wine store that boasts an unmatched depth of selection, along with an array of gourmet food items and specialized cooking accessories, all within a warehouse-sized store.

Some of the shoppers are there to choose the perfect wine and hors d’oeuvre for a dinner featuring a fish entre, while others are looking for something that pairs with meat. While there are lots of choices, only some are relevant to each shopper, and many don’t have the time or interest to wander every aisle and browse through items that don’t pertain to them.

Fortunately, the store prominently labels its aisles, wine selections and food choices with pairing information and displays them in clearly marked pricing segments. Instead of wandering the entire store, shoppers can zero in on one or two sections. What could be an overwhelming and time-consuming experience is suddenly personalized and more productive.

This is the approach that we’ve taken with SAP Fiori. It goes far beyond the surface-level of colors, friendly icons, and screen displays. It actually helps employees and companies to run simple. At SAP, we believe this is the future of work, and increasingly, businesses across industries feel the same way.
