We are very honored to have recently been awarded with the “Germany - Land of Ideas” initiative prize for our Medical Research Insights application.

Since 2005, the German Federal Government and German business, represented by the Federation of German Industries (BDI), annually highlight activities of people who are innovative and inventive in schools, companies, research institutes, initiatives, clubs, and associations. Worldwide the initiative is a unique platform in terms of its importance of merit for promoting a single country as a location

fit for the future. This year the competition focused on digitalization under the slogan „Urban Space. Rural Space. Cyberspace“. Its aim is to position Germany as the “Land of Ideas”: open to the world, imaginative, innovative and successful. All award winners are given the great opportunity to contribute to this vision, to showcase globally Germany’s location strengths, which enables them also to serve as role models for others.

Personalized medicine, individually tailored to the patient's treatment, is considered one of the future’s fundamentally changing trends in the medical field. New diagnostic options and methods such as genome sequencing or new imaging techniques have led to complex data sets stored in heterogeneous IT landscapes. Researchers need to make use of these increasingly accumulating data sets to create new hypotheses and validate them, but they also need to ensure an efficient transfer of new research results into better treatment options for patients, which will eventually save lives.

At this interface between research and treatment, Medical Research Insights comes into play. Developed in partnership with the German National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg, the Innovation Center Network and the Design & Co-Innovation Center from SAP, the solution enables doctors and researchers to securely analyze clinical data to accelerate cancer research and to facilitate matching patients with the best clinical trials. Medical Research Insights gives instant access to clinical information from multiple sources for comprehensive cancer care and allows visualizing and analyzing complex data sets in real-time. Thanks to a generic healthcare data model, patient data from many different sources, such as clinical information systems, tumor registries, bio bank systems and even text documents like physicians’ notes can be accessed. Patient cohorts can be persisted and edited collaboratively, exported for further analysis in other software or compared according to different metrics, such as number of patients or age or treatment response. In addition, it offers a holistic overview of each individual patient’s medical history in a graphical timeline to support medical staff during patient visits and tumor boards.

Designed for different roles Medical Research Insights replaces time-consuming and manual processes, streamlines workflows and increases the efficiency among various medical teams. It can be customized for different cancer centers and hospitals. Therefore, Medical Research Insights enables more institutes to easily obtain meaningful data to improve the accuracy of cancer diagnoses and, ultimately, patient outcomes.

Medical Research Insights was further recognized by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, as “inspiring collaborations”. It received a Strategy & Research Professional Notable for the Core77 Design Awards 2014, was presented as the SAP HANA Innovation Award 2014 in the category “Social Hero Innovator”. Most recently, Medical Research Insights won the German Design Award 2015 in the category “Excellent Communications Design – Interactive User Experie...”, was a Finalist at the Interaction Awards 2015 and was recognized with the iF Design Award 2015.
