The second day of the SAP Manufacturing Industries Forum kicked off with as much vigor and energy as the first. Click here for a yesterday's recap. The audience was engaged, the speakers (mostly customers) provided valuable insights, and the staff remained helpful and friendly. Here's a breakdown:

Digitalization of Manufacturing and Extended Supply Chain - What Does This Mean For You?

George Kube, VP IM&C, SAP

A staggering $14.4 trillion "value at stake" by 2022 through digitalization... that's real money up for the taking. And while 90% of CEO's realize they'll be affected by IoT, only 15% are executing projects to leverage it. Key takeaway from George was "do not start with technology. Assume it's there and instead, focus on your business. He mentioned that the Internet of Things isn't about "things" at all. It's not even about the internet. Instead, it's about the opportunity to serve your customers better. Speaking of which, he went on to name a few:

Marine Engines & Systems (MAN) uses its "digital twin" to simulate potential mishaps with their engines while out at sea. They use SAP PLM to manage these processes and are looking into 3D visualization to enhance abilities.

All of Siemens' equipment is connected. But now they can also provide applications on top of this to see how each piece is performing. Their goal is to tie customers closer to themselves to keep business and are running all of this through the Hana Cloud Platform as a service.

Karma's Implementation of SAP Hybris Solutions & SAP Configure, Price, and Quote

Ketan Gohil, Director ERP, Karma Automotive

With the only car in the world that has 3 sources of energy (electric, gas, & solar) Karma has a knack for innovation. Their recent project needed to hit on current mega trends such as mobility, big data, cloud, social media integration, and IoT. They've achieved this goal by migrating to the Hana Cloud Portal and are currently implementing Hybris. As a result, Karma is able to connect customers, retailers, call centers and end users while implementing Fiori and Personas for a simple user experience on all levels.

BUNN - SAP Product Lifecycle Management Implementation & Optimization Initiative

Jeff Doneghue, Director, BUNN

BUNN is a beverage equipment manufacturer. They suffered from a lack of automation to tie critical data to employees on key projects. Their multitude of disparate systems limited efficiency and growth. By turning to SAP and PLM partner, LeverX, BUNN was able to provide a rapid customer response, a broad & flexible product line, and consistent quality. Ultimately, this digitally transformed BUNN into a nimble, sales-oriented, organization.

Joy Global: Changing the Shop Floor Culture with Visual Management Tools

Toby Hardeman, GBS Manager, Joy Global

Visual management tools provided through MII were a game changer for Joy Global in how their production facilities are managed. The initial project started at one small warehouse. But since it was implemented on time and on budget, the proof was in the pudding and upper management was eager to roll-out globally. As a result, they can provide management with real time metrics, improve efficiency on the shop floor, and simplify reporting to make actionable items more obvious for employees to be proactive. Outside of the sessions were loads of really cool innovative showcase booths including this one, made from legos!  But don't underestimate this "toy". These legos are used to

visualize a "digital twin" and when the demonstrator moved different pieces (like an engine part), all of the data instantly showed up on the screen. The data included parts information, ordering procedures, and even alert notifications for upcoming service needed to quickly detect issues before assets break.Connected service providers receive all necessary information to save time, money, and nerves.

And while the event comes to an end, many meaningful conversations will begin. Conversations that will allow our customers and prospects to digitally transform their businesses and run live to run simple.
