SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio

See how to swipe between pages on the iPad using filtering.  Will the Design Studio (Zen) application deploy to the iPhone?  Learn from my mistakes in this blog, which is what I mean by "do as I say, not as I do".

Some new screens have appeared in this Beta version but you cannot use them yet.

See under General Startup Mode the radio button Connect to BI Platform.  Don't select it if you are in Beta testing!

If you select it, you are presented with this screen to log in to the BI Platform, but it is not functional yet.

It is not working in this version, but it is good to know that it appears to be planned for future versions to connect to the BI platform.

Filtering between Pages on the iPad

First, I set up one pagebook with 2 pages. The first page has a line chart with the projects across the bottom and a crosstab.  The second page has a bar chart.

3fig.jpg

On the properties for the pagebook I have the "Slide In" transition effect.

4fig.jpg

This will allow the "consumer" of the Design Studio application to "swipe" on the iPad to the next page in the pagebook.

I will set this up so the when the consumer selects a project on the chart, the application will "swipe" to page 2 of the iPad and show the details (in this case, project budget, actuals and budget balance) of that particular chart.

Since I don't know how to code in JavaScript, but I use the "wizard" (Ctrl+Space) to help me along.

5fig.png

On the properties of the first chart, I select On Select under Events

6fig.png

Using the "Content Assistance" I am able to enter the above commands with help.  Set filter on Data Source (BEx Query), filter on InfoObject Project (ZPROJ), get the selected member project, then go to index 1 of the pagebook (really page 2, since indexing begins at 0).

On the iPad:

Selecting a project (such as "WATER") will "drilldown"/swipe to the second page graph showing the "Water" data:

Does Design Studio/Zen Deploy to on the iPhone?

Yes, it does but I didn't size for it. See below

Reminder the beta program is accepting applications through September 14th.  There is still time to join.  Also follow the new SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio space on SCN.

Also get hands-on with Design Studio and SAP Zen at SAP TechEd Las Vegas in October.   ASUG has a pre-conference session with SAP Mentor Ingo Hilgefort on October 15 called "SAP BusinessObjects BI 4 Feature Pack 3 Tools (with ZEN) – In a Single Day – HANDS-ON SESSION"

As stated in previous blogs SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio is in beta testing.  Recently, we received a new download of the application and there are some new items to look at, this time themes.

First I opened an existing Analysis application from an older version:

I go ahead and open it

Under the Display Properties let's review the Theme tab

2fig.jpg

Notice there is SAP Gold Reflection, SAP High Contract Black, New BI Custom.  SAP Mobile was there before for deploying to the iPad.

The default is SAP Platinum as shown below.

Below is a new theme, High Contrast Black

More to come in future blogs.

I hope to see you in person at SAP TechEd Las Vegas.

Part 1 of this blog can be found here - note you can still apply for Beta program until September 14.  Please see this link to apply.

Since the new release of Zen, aka BusinessObjects Design Studio, the first complaint was " you mean I need to type in all the values when I do a dropdown against master data"?

Meaning you had to type in the key and text for any drop down values:

1fig.png

Figure 1

Figure 1 shows where we had to manually type in each key and text data for any drop down.

With the latest release, this issue goes away.  A tip is to use the CTRL-Space feature in the editor.

Figure 2

Figure 2 shows a crosstab and the chart and a dropdown.  I've already included the BEx query as a data source.

Figure 3

First go on the Properties of the application, to the On Startup of Events

This is the script to put in:

DROPDOWN_1.setItems(DS_1.getMemberList("ZPROJ", "KEY", "TEXT", 4,"ALL"));

In JavaScript-like terms, it is getting the members of ZPROJ info object, key and text, with maximum 4 rows to display, with "ALL" being the default.

Note that I did not have to type this in manually but simply use the CRTL-Space wizard that walked me through the steps.

For the properties of the Dropdown box, you can use the JavaScript wizard to walk you through the code for the On Select event:

Figure 5

Figure 5 shows you can activate content assistance (which is what I did) by pressing Ctrl + Space

Figure 5 represents the code for the On Select event - so on select info object ZPROJ get selected value.

Figure 6

Figure 6 shows how it operates in run-time (desktop or iPad) with showing 4 as maximum, default to all

Figure 7 shows the runtime - when I filtered on Distribution, it displays only the Distribution results.

So far in my SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio beta experiences I have not personally coded - I have used the wizard.

We learned at Mastering SAP BI in Australia this week that the Zen (also known as BusinessObjects Design Studio) registration for Beta program has been extended to September 14th.  If you are interested please see this link.

Additionally, beta participants can also download a new version of Zen/BusinessObjects Design Studio.  Below are some of the new things I noticed.

1figzen.png

Figure 1

Figure 1 shows a new welcome screen with this beta version.  Included are tutorials, recently used applications, links back to SCN and create a new application.

2figzen.png

Figure 2

After adding a data source to the application you can edit the initial view (this was not available before) as shown in Figure 2

3figzen.png

Figure 3

Figure 3 shows a preview of how the application will look, either as a crosstab or a chart.  This is after clicking the Edit Initial View.

Notice in the upper right hand corner the "Pause Refresh".  If you click this, you can make several navigation steps, unclick it, and then have only one trip made back to the server.  You can filter on an item that is not in the result set by adding it to the Background Filter.  This is similar to the other Analysis applications.

Figure 4

Figure 4 shows the preview of the chart.

If you click OK+Create Crosstab the application will create a cross tab and same for OK+Create Chart

I will write more once I start getting more experience with it.  These are new and welcomed features.
