This is part two of the blog post series to evaluate the touch screen capability of different devices and operating systems with SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio. And the other way around to see how the dashboards benefit from touch screen navigation.

In the first blog post I used a convertible laptop, this time I will use a convertible tablet from Fujitsu. What is the difference? A convertible laptop is very much like a regular laptop, but you can turn and fold the screen, so it looks like a very thick tablet. Nothing for ‘to go’, but a nice feature to sit on a round table and to discuss the content. A convertible tablet on the other side is first at all a tablet, but you can attach a solid keyboard and get – in the case of the Fujitsu STYLISTIC - some extra battery power. Very mobile, very convenient … but as good as a regular laptop? Let’s give it a try.

I have documented the test in the video below. It is without voice, so I will explain the steps upfront. Windows 8 starts up fast and the soft keyboard works well. The tablet is 16:9, with is somehow uncommen, if you work with a 4:3 iPad all the time. Great for spreadsheet analysis, but will your dashboard design work on both form factors?

You can move the Windows 8 tiles and – just my old-fashioned view – they seem to belong much more to the tablet than to the laptop. But that’s old-fashioned for sure …  To stay on the traditional side I open the classic desktop to start SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio.

This time I want to test a Profit & Loss Dashboard with grid, vertical-bar chart, classic P&L graphic and a map view. It is all on one page to utilize the wide screen best. In the iPad version it is splitted in 3 screens. What does iPad version means? It is actually just a variant in the graphical output, as Design Studio creates HTML5 which can run everywhere. (Note to myself: Let’s talk about an automatic device detector and output selector with the development team).

You can see in this video that the tablet reacts really nice, but I had some trouble to hit this tiny select box for the graphic switch the first time. Practice and time will solve this.

Did I like it? Yes! It is very nice to have a complete Windows with all the applications with you. It gives you much more flexibility not just to execute your dashboard, but also to use the Design Studio to change and develop. But when the fan starts to cool the CPU you know the price you have to pay for a workhorse.
