Design Studio has been able to provide basic conditional formatting capabilities for charts by mainly relying on BEx Exceptions and partners have been able to extend that concept to far more advanced capabilities as part of their chart offerings.

In our latest release of our extensions we also implemented the concept of conditional formatting for our map components so that you could setup a map and in addition provide your users a quick visual indication by configuring several thresholds.

So lets take a very simple example.

So we are going to use a data set that shows Countries and their regions as well as three measures: Profit, Cost, Net Values.

We first adding the map components and are going to configure the details.

For our example we are configuring Net Value as the primary measure and because we are going to setup a Choropleth map to go from Countries to Region, we don't need the secondary measure.

On the first map level - in our case Country - we add dimension Country and on the second level we add dimension Region.

As you can see the component allows us to choose between the Key and Text information as well as from a list of different data formats, such as ISO code, FIPS code, World ID, ...

So we can see the Net Value across the countries now and with a simple double-click on CA for Canada, ...

.. we get to see the next level of the map, showing the provinces in Canada.

Now we are going to add the Conditional Formatting and first we can choose if the Rule is going to be applied to all levels for our map or if we would like to setup different rules for each of the levels.

In addition we can choose from a set of Rule Types.

  • Single Measure allows us to compare the measure against a static or dynamic assigned value
  • Measure Calculation allows us to define a calculation first and the result of the calculation can then be compared against static or dynamic values.
  • Target Value allows us to compare two measures with each other and based on the percentage share we can setup - in this example - different set of colors.

So in my example I decided to go with the Target Value option and I am using measure Profit as Comparison Measure and Net Value as the Target Value and did configure three color rules and based on the percentage values the map will be color coded accordingly.

So going back to our map with the provinces of Canada, we can see now the conditional formatting applied and two out of the provinces are not up to the same level as the others.

Conditional Formatting is a great capability to highlight your data, so that your users don't have to "read" all the different values and potentially even calculate in their head at which level the profit is in this example, but instead you can provide a quickly consumable visual clue - and its also available for maps now.
