I was really excited to hear the news from their Chief Digital Cookie Executive that the Girl Scouts of the USA are expanding their cookie sales model into the digital environment.  As a digital marketer myself, seeing such a long-standing tradition be renewed in a digital environment is refreshing and exciting.

It all makes sense, especially if you understand the mission and the history of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Their mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.  Established in 1912 and chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1950, the Girl Scouts of the USA have been accomplishing their mission for generations. It couldn’t be more fitting that, in our current generation defined by “digital natives”, the Girl Scouts of the USA have turned to digital technologies to accelerate their progress of their mission – even toting tablets and other mobile devices to secure orders from their favorite neighbors and their family members.

Cookies play no small role in helping them with this mission, representing over $700 million in annual sales and providing resources for the 2.3 million girl scouts across the nation to develop courage, confidence and character – and to make the world a better place.  With the help of Accenture and hybris, an SAP company, Girl Scouts of the USA are paving new roads for these girls.  In alignment with SAP’s vision of helping the world run better and improving people’s lives, this is a particularly meaningful and relevant use of technology to achieve a company’s mission.

This announcement has come with great fanfare, being featured on national platforms like Good Morning America and The New York Times, as well as industry publications like GigaOM and The Customer Edge.  Girl Scouts of the USA have even pulled together a great list of “the best internet reactions” to the news on their own blog platform – check it out!

Congratulations to the Girl Scouts of the USA for extending the nostalgic experience associated with Girl Scouts cookies to the digital masses and to Accenture and hybris, an SAP company, for enabling a new generation of cookie sellers for success. The tradition continues, with greater reach than ever before!
