A proposal to fire someone is always getting attention from people if they are concerned. Therefore I read the blog from David Linthicum very carefully as he proposed to fire the enterprise architects if they are not innovative enough. For him the enterprise architect has a decisive role to ensure the adoption of cloud services in an enterprise.

Although I do not see a recommendation to fire someone as a good advice I think that he has got a point concerning the role of enterprise architects today.

The implementation of a good enterprise architecture is not granted for many companies but is a must for any cloud adoption. It often requires strong efforts to adopt such an approach. There is a real tendency that architects are becoming the administrators of their architecture documents instead of pushing innovative solutions based on their architecture.

This risk is becoming quite obvious in many cloud discussions. The simple argument: The cloud is not secure! is used even by enterprise architects who should know it better. Funny enough some of the proponents of such an argument are lacking a security architecture and a unified identity management.

I am deeply convinced that all enterprises and organizations will need to master cloud adoption to one degree or another. Driving the adoption of a well-defined enterprise architecture which includes a security architecture is therefore the most urgent homework for each enterprise architect. Before other people begin to discuss whether they should get rid of us we should fulfill this requirement.
