Increasing SAP® ASE Performance Using Cache Extension Technology on EMC XtremIO All-Flash Array

EMC and SAP have collaborated to highlight the incredible performance improvements by combining the SAP® Adaptive Server® Enterprise (SAP ASE) 16 SP02 database server with the EMC XtremIO All-Flash Array. In the SAP Co-Innovation Lab in Palo Alto, California, we conducted an experiment to demonstrate what can be achieved. We installed SAP ASE 16 SP02 on a Fujitsu machine and attached both an EMC XtremIO All-Flash Array v4.0.x and a Fujitsu Eternus HDD SAN Storage. We enabled the MemScale Option in SAP ASE 16 SP02 and used the new NV cache feature and the XtremIO All-Flash Array to demonstrate between 280% and 420% performance improvements in SAP ASE query response time and the number of database transactions without making any changes to the applications or the way end users/applications interact with the database.

Check out Kevin Liu's blog for a quick overview of the project.

Innovate on SAP Mobile Platform - Co-innovation Power Week in Newton Square PANSQ_SMP_Workshop_2015.jpg

SAP Co-Innovation Labs (COIL) at Newtown Square PA USA, in cooperation with SAP GPO Solution Center conducted a partner Co-innovation Power Week event on SAP Mobile Platform on February 10-12, 2015 with attendance of 13 partners and 21 participants. The aim was to enable partners to use SAP Mobile Platform for developing and deploying innovative and cutting-edge business solutions. This in-depth, hands-on training led by Dr. Peter Kulka from COIL Walldorf introduced participants to SAP Mobile Platform, typical usage scenarios and unique platform features.

This event targeted partners that already have a concept of a mobile application which they are looking at developing on SAP Mobile Platform (use case). The main goal of the Power week was to identify use cases suitable for running co-innovation projects with SAP. GPO and COIL representatives also discussed Co-innovation partnering options and how SAP supports partners in their development effort and subsequently go-to-market strategy.

Encryption for HANA in the cloud - Findings of a collaborative COIL project with Intel, Vormetric, and Virtustream

Used by enterprises for transactional data operations as well as for real-time analytics, SAP HANA stores and processes sensitive enterprise data. Encryption of the mission critical data managed by HANA becomes more and more critical for many of our customers, especially when HANA is deployed in the cloud and offered as a service.  Working closely with Intel, Vormetric, and Virtustream, SAP Co-innovation Lab (COIL), with the help of our HANA product management team, HANA Enterprise Cloud team, and  many other SAP groups, has shown that with the recent AES-NI innovations in the Intel Xeon processor family and the Vormetric encryption software enhancements optimally exploiting AES NI, large data sets on SAP HANA can be encrypted or decrypted with virtually no performance overhead.

Check out Kevin Liu’s blog to get an overview of the project. Detail findings are available in a technical deep-dive COIL whitepaper, and an Intel paper for a business summary.

Screenshot_2014-11-17-15-13-35.pngEnd-to-end mobile asset maintenance prototype leveraging augmented reality demonstrated at SAP TechEd && d-code Berlin

Following up on the previously delivered showcase study for the Augmented Reality Expo in Santa Clara, partners allvisual (formerly Marenco Swissconsulting), Orianda Solutions and AR technology provider Wikitude created a prototype for an end-to-end AR-enhanced E2E Asset Maintenance Scenario tailored for both service mechanics as well as pilots to ensure the strong requirements for helicopter maintenance. The use case is motivated by requirements of Swiss helicopter manufacturer Marenco Swisshelicopters.

The very well visited expert networking sessions as well as the demonstrations at the COIL booth aroused a lot of interest in the audience. Have a look at the overview blog and Wikitude's video giving an impression of our joint presentations at the event.

how-will-the-grid-handle-electric-vehicles-pdf.gifNew Electric Mobility Service Provider software developed in COIL

SAP announced plans to convert a fifth of its 25,000 company cars to purely electric-powered vehicles by 2020. Over the last three years SAP’s Internet of Things team  developed a new "Electric Mobility Service Provider" software with system landscape support provided by COIL, that was demonstrated at this event. Have a look at the press coverage e.g. in Wallstreet Journal.

The solution will from now on be used at SAP to:

  • centrally control all charging processes as a whole to regulate the power drawn by the electric vehicles to prevent blackouts or brownouts
  • monitoring and configuration of the on premise charging infrastructure as well as fault tracking
  • user and authentication management
  • asset management
  • invoicing/ billing

Please check out the project’s SAP TV “SAP Electrifies” video as well as Joerg Ferchow's blog on Electric Mobility.
