Be Careful. You Might Succeed.

TLDR: Bill McDermott’s keynote at Sapphire didn’t talk about SAPs restructuring or corporate shifts but notably, the focus was on ‘simple’ which may not have resonated with everyone who was there looking for answers. But to EnterpriseJungle it was the conclusion to and delivery on a promise they made us, that as development partners we could build last mile solutions atop their platform and be given a direct channel to their customers: Simple.

Start-ups talking about the commercialization or revenue path of their product often talk about selling to enterprises. It’s almost a de facto response and whilst sometimes they achieve this goal, generally it’s deluded. The pipeline to the precious enterprise customer is a road littered with obstacles. Getting those few lighthouse customers – real enterprises – is nigh on impossible.

I have spent the better part of the last decade in the collaboration space, first as a user and then in corporate and advisory positions. My core focus has been on two simple but key premises. Firstly, “The Answer Is Always In the Room” … a statement of fact that whatever you need, there’s always someone in the room you are in who can solve the need, or knows someone who can solve it for you. The megaphone approach, shouting the question out in the room you are in, is rarely an option. Add to that employees have a right to privacy, a right to not have to let the entire company know they need help. So creating a confidential platform in place of a megaphone has been on the agenda. Secondly I look to Donald Rumsfeld’s “Unknown Unknowns:” There are things you don’t know you don’t know – and that being the case, what is the best way to bring to light knowledge or data that the user needs but doesn’t know they need?
