Earth observation data provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) are an interesting source for innovative products and service offerings. At the ESA App Camp, participants showed how they can use HANA Cloud Platform for implementing their ideas using SAPUI5 and HANA’s high performance spatial capabilities.

From February 26 until March 1, six teams, altogether 23 participants from 11 countries, competed in the final of the ESA App Camp in Barcelona which was sponsored by SAP University Alliances.

During the preselection events in January, they convinced already representatives of ESA and SAP with their ideas and plans how to develop geospatial data related solutions on HANA Cloud Platform:

Sustainable fishing, improving renewable energy business or helping farmers at their work were just some of the ideas the teams built HCP applications for.

Six technical experts from SAP (Hinnerk Gildhoff, Dr. Jens Glander, Daniel Knecht, Stephan Lange, Christian Schütz and Sascha Zorn) supported the participants with their insights how to use SAP’s technology platform best. They also provided the participants with an example application on how to use HANA spatial functionality for analyzing earth observation data.

Participant Ana Cristina van Oijhuizen: “We are excited to implement our idea on HANA Cloud Platform. Thanks to the SAP team for the great technical support.

On Sunday the teams presented in front of a jury of ESA and SAP representatives both, the business idea and the applications that they built on HANA Cloud Platform. The jury was very impressed by the quality of the business concepts, the user interfaces and the functionality of the applications.

The overall prize sponsored by ESA won the team Code Green from UK. They convinced with a stunning presentation and prototype of a solution that uses earth observation data for helping farmers. Also the SAP special prize was given to a team working in the area precision farming. The team AGRAI from Finland also convinced with their team spirit.

The highlight of the event was the award ceremony at SAP's booth at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. CEO Bill McDermott and ESA directors Josef Aschbacher and Frank Salzgeber handed over the prizes for the winning teams.

Bill encouraged all the participants to continue working on their ideas in order to develop a real business product. For this, the SAP Startup Focus Program represented by James Crawford expressed high interest in collaborating with all the teams in order to help them to become a successful startup.
