HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) offers many well-proven and widely-used services and tools that support an array of business use cases. Yet there’s one increasingly encountered scenario that may not be as well-known to customers – integration between HCP and on-premise Hadoop.    By utilizing HANA Smart Data Integration (SDI), customers can now integrate the data residing in their Hadoop cluster with HCP services.

The ability to provide integration between HCP and Hadoop is increasingly critical given the rapidly growing use of big data among SAP’s customer base.  Now that the business value of collecting and analyzing Big Data has been proven in the marketplace, it’s natural for these customers to desire to link their Big Data repositories built on Hadoop with their business critical data stored in SAP HANA in the cloud.

To connect their Hadoop cluster to HCP, all the customer needs is the following:

  1. A paid HCP account with a dedicated HANA database 
  2. An HCI license (which automatically includes SDI)
  3. The ability to utilize Hive on their on-premise Hadoop cluster

Customers and prospects should note that currently to use SDI, they’ll need a licensed HCP account.  But it’s also possible for them to evaluate HCP to Hadoop integration using a HANA trial account as long as they already have a SDI (or HCI) license obtained through an on-premise version of HANA.  In the future, SAP will be enabling all HCP trial account users to utilize SDI.  SAP is also planning to release more adaptors for Hadoop so customers will have additional Hadoop access tool choices beyond Hive.
