For the second time in the last month Optimal came out on top in a live, head-to-head competition against other SAP firms, where the Optimal team deployed a real-life SAP solution within a few days.
This afternoon, the Optimal team was recognized as the winner of the HANA Real-Time Race, competing against European consulting firm, Bluefin, at the SAP TechEd show in Las Vegas.
The performance was impressive. The Optimal team took SAP BPC financial data in SAP BW, migrated it to HANA, restated the financial data, built reports and dashboards and even rendered data on mobile devices.
The judges — employees of one of North America’s leading food makers – who graciously provided the data and the requirements, applauded Optimal’s “polish”, speed and quality of the application, and the integrated nature of the solution that was built.
They declared the Optimal solution to be superior along 2 out of 3 dimensions and recognized Optimal as the overall HANA Real-Time Race award winner.

Gearing Up for the SAP HANA Real-Time Race at TechEd

The SAP world is buzzing about who will win the HANA Real-Time Race taking place Tuesday through Thursday (October 16 – 18) at SAP TechEd 2012 in Las Vegas.
Led by Optimal SAP HANA Practice Director Leon Reznick and Optimal SAP BI Solution and Practice Director Jeremy Stierwalt — and coming off a recent victory at the first annual ASUG BusinessObjects Users Group Conferenc Developer Wars, — it’s fair to say that team Optimal is amped for the challenge.
Joining the Optimal pit crew for this race was EMC Global SAP Lead Henrik Wagner, EMC Global Senior SAP Infrastructure Architect Christoph Streubert, EMC Senior Director of SAP Product Management Haji Aref, and Senior Product Manager at Cisco Erik Lillestolen.
With more than 17 years of experience, Optimal is perhaps the largest pure-play SAP solutions and services provider in North America, deploying, maintaining and supporting the entire range of SAP solutions — including all SAP and BusinessObjects modules and industry solutions, the latest NetWeaver technology, and the full offerings from Sybase and SuccessFactors.
But Optimal’s success in the HANA Real-Time Race will hinge most heavily on its expertise and leading-edge skills working directly with SAP HANA, SAP Analytics, SAP BI, SAP Mobility, and SAP Business Warehouse solutions.
Equally vital, if not more so, will be Optimal’s experience and skill addressing a customer’s most pressing business challenges and providing the customer with accurate, real-time, easily consumed insight that positively impacts important business decisions day in and day out.
As a rule, Optimal is hardware agnostic when it comes to HANA. For this race, per SAP’s direction, Optimal will be driving the newly launched Cisco UCS with EMC Storage for SAP HANA Scale-out Solution.

Now, I’m not one for calling a race before it’s run, but team Optimal — with support from Cisco and EMC – certainly looks strong…

SAP TechEd: The Must-See HANA Real-Time Race

With over 1,000 hours of hands-on workshops, demo-driven lectures, and Q&A sessions with SAP mentors, executives and customers, SAP TechEd 2012 Las Vegas is a must-attend event for all SAP professionals who want to stay on top of their game and ahead of their peers.
SAP skills are in high demand and today’s SAP pros rank among the highest in pay for all IT fields. Suffice it to say, the SAP consulting landscape is fiercely competitive.
Underscoring this, TechEd features several venues where top-notch SAP pros can display their prowess — from the pre-conference SAP InnoJamwhere SAP developers build applications for a healthier world to the tenth annual SAP Demo Jam, a one-hour competition where choice teams compete by presenting live demos that are fully operational.
But the must-see competition at this year’s TechEd is the SAP HANA Real-Time Race where teams from SAP partners Bluefin Solutions and Optimal Solutions will try to outsmart and out-code each other to determine who can deploy the fastest and most valuable system on SAP HANA.
This is one competition you won’t want to miss — a TechEd race for the ages, and you’ll want to see it first hand.
Where: Technology Showcase, Show Floor, Hall C, Level 2

SAP to Ellison: C’mon, Man!

In his opening keynote of Oracle OpenWorld 2012, Larry Ellison made the following outrageous (even by Larry standards) statement:
“SAP has an in-memory machine, you know, that’s a little bit smaller than what we offer,” Ellison said. “We have 26TB of memory; they (SAP) offer point-five (0.5TB) terabytes of memory. It’s called HANA; her name is HANA. I promised Mark (Hurd) that when I did this presentation I was not going to mention them, I’m glad to keep the promise. The HANA in-memory machine is like really small.”
Tackling the second part first, promising not to mention SAP immediately after mentioning SAP can perhaps be forgiven, in this instance, as a senior moment. Let’s be honest, we all have them now and then — event you twenty-somethings.
But, seriously, Ellison not mentioning SAP? I simply cannot recall an interview or earnings call over the past decade during which Ellison failed to drop the “SAP” bomb.
Now on to Ellison’s more egregious claim that SAP has an in-memory machine “that’s a little bit smaller than what we offer [...] We have 26TB of memory; they (SAP) offer point-five (0.5TB) terabytes of memory.”
Fact: Just last May at SAPPHIRE in Orlando, IBM launched the 100TB IBM HANA analytics system to much fanfare.
Historically, if Oracle couldn’t beat a competitor it simply bought it or sued it or acquired it (or some combination thereof).
It will be interesting to see what Ellison’s next move will be.
But to blatantly lie? What page from Sun Tzu’s “Art of War” did Ellison tear that tactic from?
SAP to Ellison:, “C’mon man!”
Understandably, SAP execs to exception to Ellison’s OprnWorld comments. Here’s a sampling of articles:
