Have you ever heard about SAP Idea Incubator (SII)?  Do you know what you can get from the SII program?  Do you know how to participate in SII to incubate your idea? SII connects you to the right development resources to jumpstart a custom application based on SAP solutions with less risk and less concern. For more details, please visit our website: http://incubator.saphana.com.

Customers have many great, creative ideas about building new business applications and/or solving existing challenges with SAP solutions, but many times, these ideas do not turn into projects because:

  1. Concerns regarding technology risks;
  2. Limited resources available (such as HANA instances, data scientist, or HANA knowledge);

In these cases, SII is designed to help customers turn these ideas into reality, by connecting these ideas to the developer/partner pool. With SII, customers can now quickly:

  1. Build a simple prototype with simple data and UI,
  2. Get a mathematic algorithm for tough questions,
  3. Test feasibility for the key components in the big plan,
  4. Crowd source challenges to brainstorm ideas for specific data

However, many ideas are rejected due to the following circumstances.

  1. Missing business needs from real customers: the ideas originate from personal experiences or hypothesis of business challenges. Although some demonstrate very interesting concepts and potential market opportunities, these ideas need more evaluation, support, and guidance.  SII looks for SAP customers’ ideas that supports their own business needs, supports the customers who are willing to start but facing limitations.
  2. Lacking business data (real data or simulated data): Data is the single most important thing for SII projects. Without data, ideas stay in the concept phase and SII can’t oversee the deliverables. So, please provide data along with your idea. It can be real business data, or it can be simulated or public data.
  3. Ideas need 3rd party solutions: ideas that are related to other non-SAP solutions are very complex.  We will evaluate the complexity of the additional solutions to decide to accept or reject.  For example, for ideas based on a specific partner solution, it might be better to work with them directly.
  4. Ideas should have reasonable scope: SII evaluates the idea scope.  In general, to help build applications successfully, SII recommends starting at a smaller scope with a short delivering cycle. The bigger the project, the higher the risk of failure. We can run multiple iterations to prove all building blocks.  And then, with confidence for smaller ideas, we can gain more confidence for a big plan.

One good idea example -- Mantis Technology Group submitted a real business idea to expand their business model.  Their existing business model is to analyze customer related social media news (such as analyst report, financial news, etc.) and discover the co-relationship between those news and company’s stock prices. With SAP HANA predictive capability, they wanted to expand their business model to predicting how the stock will be impacted, assuming that we can collect social media news earlier which help the company develop more services to the customers.

So, they shared their history dataset with one-year stock price change (revised) and sentiment analysis results for one customer (simulated).  They were looking for several mathematic algorithms to demonstrate the business prediction works on HANA, and wanted to know how easily they could implement/change this model with SAP HANA. Through SAP Idea Incubator, they got several algorithm prototypes running on SAP HANA.  For this case, with zero payment and less risk, they quickly started their project and got great results to continue their journey on SAP HANA.
