I wanted to draw your attention to an excellent blog post - actually a series - by Sam Castro entitled "SAP Internet of Things (Industrial Flavor)" - part 1 and part 2 - with a promised part 3 on the way.  Sam draws the parallels between the rapidly emerging area of consumer IoT - applying connected devices to consumer applications and retail marketing, and industrial "M2M" (machine to machine) applications that have been around for longer, but are also rapidly evolving to take advantages of new technical capabilities.  And he talks about how these 2 areas are actually complementary - not entirely separate.

I've recently been getting more questions about how SAP ESP, and SAP HANA smart data streaming (SDS),  can be used in conjunction with SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (SAP MII).  In brief,  ESP/SDS can complement an MII system by adding real-time complex event processing - providing the ability to monitor trends or correlations, watch for patterns, etc.

Also, some questions have been more generically about whether and how ESP/SDS can be used to monitor/analyze SCADA data from industrial systems.  The answer to this question is easy: yes it can, in conjunction with MII.  In particular,  the Plant Connectivity (better known as PCo) component of MII supports a wide variety of SCADA protocols and now includes support for ESP (and by extension, HANA streaming).  This means that PCo can stream SCADA data into ESP/SDS,  allowing you to apply active monitoring as well as capture specific data in HANA.

Luckily, Sam has all of these questions in his blog (thanks Sam - you're definitely a better blogger),  so let me point out a few key posts that I think you'll find valuable if you're asking some of these questions:

Streaming Data in the Industrial Space (SAP MII/PCo/ESP/HANA) - talks about how these products/components can be used together to produce real-time, actionable insight from all the data streaming in from sensors

And if/when you're really ready to dig in, here's the how-to guide you'll need:   SAP MII & ESP Integration Guide (Technical)
