It's that TechEd/d-code time of year so we have been looking to extend the HDE family. This time, we scoured the SCN forums to find those that were helping out others - rather than just focussing on the bloggers! Vivek is the first of 4 HDEs for October, and so I've stuck with the same old boilerplate blog format to keep the admin time down.

I also learnt that vivekbhoj is practices Taekwondo; I'm not sure if he's a master but it sounded cooler so I ran with it. So please welcome Vivek to the HDE program!

Tell us a little around your background in the industry

I have 4 years of experience and have worked with SAP ABAP(mostly with ALE/IDocs)/SAP BW/SAP HANA mainly in the areas of support and development.

I started my career with Mahindra Satyam(now Tech Mahindra) in 2010. That time I was selected to get trained in SAP ABAP and I had no clue as to even what SAP was.

After completion of training, I got an opportunity to work as an SAP ABAP Support Consultant for an FMCG Customer and that's how my journey started with SAP.

I later joined Mindtree in 2013 where I have been working as an SAP HANA Consultant.

How did you get into the SAP HANA space?

In 2012, I heard and read a lot about SAP HANA and wanted to know more about it. Luckily, I got a chance to get trained in SAP HANA in my company and then practiced a lot on HANA Cloudshare and then passed SAP HANA Certification that year.

What advice would you give to people looking to learn SAP HANA?

I would say first people should decide themselves whether they want to learn HANA Administration, HANA Database Development or HANA Application Development. Then accordingly, they should start exploring HANA.

I would recommend everyone to complete OpenHPI course In-Memory Data Management (2013), openSAP course https://open.sap.com/course/hana1 and watch SAP HANA Academy Videos SAP HANA Academy - YouTube.

People should also read SAP HANA Essentials book by Jeffrey Word and it can be downloaded for free from the below link:

http://www.saphanabook.com/

Developers should also register for ongoing openSAP course Next Steps in Software Development on SAP HANA.

People interested to learn HANA can also read my blog: Want to learn SAP HANA? Where to Start? Certification? Updated 21.09.2014

Can you tell us a little about the projects you are working on right now?

I am currently working for an FMCG customer who is using HANA as a Side Car and working with HANA Live, developing native reports on HANA, creating roles for end users and working on a report where we are accessing HANA model from BW so that we can get current data from HANA and history data from BW in the BEx report.

Also working on a POC with Tableau and HANA to see if Tableau fits our reporting requirements.

Tell us about one of your HANA war wounds!

We have a report that is very complex and compares millions of records based on different conditions and runs very fast as the output comes out in less than 5 minutes and has shown more than 150X improvement compared to its ABAP counterpart.

But the problem with this report is that the CPU Utilization is 99% for more than a minute.

We have tried optimizing the report and have been working closely with SAP to solve the issue.

What do you see in the future of HANA?

HANA being used more as a reporting platform using HANA XS capabilities.

As Fiori Apps are now free so I see more customers being interested in Fiori Apps and Smart Business Apps based on HANA.

We have already seen HANA becoming more stable. So I see Customers being even more interested in considering Suite on HANA.

If there was one change you could make to HANA, what would it be?

Option to control CPU usage for a query.

Having an API to send an e-mail from XSJS.

Tell us a bit about yourself outside of HANA and work

Being a Taekwondo player myself, I love watching and playing Taekwondo.

I am also an avid manga(Japanese Comics) reader and watch lot of animes.
