Setting the stage
If you are concerned about metadata, you’ve probably been looking at Sybase PowerDesigner and SAP Information Steward. In this session, learn not only when to optimally use each tool, but how to use the tools together for even greater benefit.
Why does metadata matter?
In today’s webinar, the presentation used a real life case which is current today, the Merger of American and US Airways. Merging employees, hardware, software, and data from 3 organizations (US Air, American, and America West) and understanding all the components is a huge task. Things to consider would be both architectural and analytical questions.
Quality becomes a key component to all of this.
Questions like: Where is the data? How good is it? How do I build a Data Warehouse to store it all? Where is the real Master data? Everyone is looking at it from their own perspective.
So what truly goes into Metadata?
As a solution, we are looking for a road map or blueprint of our current existing infrastructure. Then using this, we can then drive this forward within a planning phase.
This approach opens the door to introduce two separate technologies that are now coming together to help you to create this 360 degree view.
Information Steward – Current System Landscape capabilities helps you to Discover, Define, and then to Monitor your data.
Within Information Steward the capabilities of Metadata Management exists. Within the content of the webinar, a deeper explanation of the various Information Steward components helped me to better understand how to utilize and leverage.
In particular, Niels expanded on the Metadata Management function. His explanation reached a good depth to allow for me to follow and absorb.
The transition from Information Steward to the SAP Sybase PowerDesigner product offering focused on leveraging the results from Information Steward.
PowerDesigner takes the current landscape from Information Steward as a start, then uses this to Plan and Design the future while also communicate this outwardly.
The six foundations of Glossary, Fully Integrated Business and Technical Models, Enterprise Modeling, Architecture Impact Analysis, Application & Technology Modeling, and Aligned Business & Technical Modeling show how PowerDesigner performs its designing and modeling capabilities.
The objective is to provide that real full life cycle understanding of the metadata and how it moves to that new transformed enterprise.
