I recently had the pleasure of hosting 70 business execs from Latin America. They’re attending the IPADE (PanAmerican Institute for High Business Direction) Executive MBA program in Mexico City, and a trip to Silicon Valley — sponsored by the organization Silicon Valley Links — is one of the highlights of their program. The diverse group of executives represented more than 10 countries in Latin America, including Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Colombia to name a few.

The executives visited several companies in the Silicon Valley, including Tesla, Facebook, and Google, in addition to SuccessFactors. We showed them our offices, talked about our business, and emphasized the advantages of our very diverse workforce, which represents more 121 nationalities.

Diversity in the workplace is good for your customers. It’s also good for your organization. Supporting diversity in the workplace increases employee engagement, improves morale, fosters a sense of community, and I can go on…. One of the ways we support diversity within SAP and SuccessFactors is through groups that bring together people who have shared interests or backgrounds. We all know how effective such groups can be — ask any member of a running, cycling, alumni, or any other community group. Although they represent a certain interest from a micro level for an individual, these groups represents the diverse interests of an organization.  Numerous times I’ve tapped into different groups for support.  I remember contacting the runners club for volunteers to support a 199 mile relay in the past.  To help me with this event, I reached out to the group Latinos@SAP, which offers networking, recruiting, and community service to the Latino community at SAP worldwide.

We had a great time with our visitors from Latin America. They asked good questions, loved our game rooms, and admired the view of San Francisco Bay from our offices. We did our best to show them our love. Here are some pictures from the day. For me the biggest takeaway was the importance having a diverse workforce to support the needs of your diverse customers.
