Content is one of the most ubiquitous things in our lives.  How many google searches do you do a day, in an attempt to find information?  How often do you open up a social media app on your phone when you have a free minute to see your friends’ content?

At SuccessFactors, we spend a lot of time thinking about content as it relates to learning within organizations.  Customers all around the world have told us they want to get better content at a more reasonable total cost of ownership.  Regardless of the organization type or size, the request is access to many types of content, better incorporation of user generated content, and the ability to manage and continue to use their own current content that they wish to continue to leverage.

Additionally, the traditional approaches to creating training content are complex and expensive.  In fact, according to ASTD’s State of the Industry Report, one hour of content costs $1,772 to create, up from $1,471 in 2011.  At the same time, there are fewer learning and development professionals due to diminishing budgets.

This customer feedback, combined with training departments being crushed by the cost of creating content and lower budgets, has led us to rethink our own approach to content.

One of the enhancements that we are excited to announce is our new Open Content Network (OCN) as part of our November 2014 release. We know that our clients want to offer their employees the ability to easily access fresh, meaningful content at a reduced cost through Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs).  MOOCs are online courses with virtually unlimited participation and open access via the web.  In addition to traditional course materials like videos and tests, they also provide interactive user forums.  MOOCs have gained popularity worldwide and can draw up to 150,000+ attendees!

With our November release, our customers can now make MOOC courses available to their employees via SuccessFactors Open Content Network.  Our Open Content Network includes MOOC partners – starting with lynda.com, Coursera, Udacity, and OpenHPI.  With the OCN, our MOOC partners’ courses can be easily included into SuccessFactors Learning.  Individual courses and catalogs can be enabled in our LMS. While employees may already be taking these courses on their own, now this will be formalized into the LMS and made available in catalogs, as part of organizational learning programs or curricula, as well as directly assigned to employees by admins or supervisors.

We are proud to be a pioneer in helping our clients find world class content from leading experts and provide it to their organizations at a lower cost than if they had created it themselves.
