I attended the annual SAP U.S. Payroll & Tax Reporting Year End Update through ASUG earlier this week which was full of useful information for SAP customers as always. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that online W2’s is on SAP’s roadmap for 2011.

This has probably been the most requested item for US Payroll customers for the past 10 years and I have personally put in multiple development requests for different customers over that timeframe. This was functionality that SAP should have addressed many years ago but unfortunately there has been limited focus on adding new pieces of functionality to US payroll.

The tentative plan from SAP is to start development in March, 2011, offer a pilot program for customers in July, 2011 and have the product available for release in the middle of September 2011. If customers would like to take part in the pilot program they should enter a low priority note under XX-CSC-US with a subject of “Online W-2 – Pilot Testing”. I know several companies who have already included it in their business planning for 2011 and I would expect this to have better than normal adoption for a new offering.

The details are very scarce at this point but what is known is that this new functionality will be based on Web Dynpro for ABAP (WD4A) and will require Enhancement Package 5 (EHP5). SAP has recently published their roadmap for this new functionality which can be accessed via http://tinyurl.com/3x7jkjy and I will continue to update this article as more information becomes available.

US Payroll customers should reach out and thank Mani Kak who is the product manager for HCM US as she has done a lot of work behind the scenes to get online W-2’s included in the roadmap and this is a good example of SAP listening to the community as they enhance their software offering.
