On 23rd of March together with yordan.pavlov we ran a SAP CodeJam event around SAP HANA Cloud Platform in Coimbra, Portugal.

University of Coimbra, the oldest one in Portugal and one of the oldest universities in the world, is an attractive place for young people to study Computer Science among other majors. In the Department of Informatics cloud technologies are taught and subjects include AWS and GWT. The expectation is to include a few lectures on HANA Cloud Platform as well in a near future.

The event was fully booked and started at 2 p.m sharp.

Students were well prepared with their accounts and tools setup, so we could start almost immediately. Interest was high and they dived in quickly and easily into HCP. After the initial Hello World Java application, they were eager to look into more advanced topics. We continued with samples from the SDK and authorization example, and they started playing with the platform. Interest then transferred to the feedback service and OpenUI5.

At the end, the feedback service was used to evaluate our session.

During the break there was informal networking and some lively discussions. We learned that one guy from Brazil is looking at HCP for his PhD thesis. We also learned that the most successful European software incubator for the last year is in Coimbra. There was interest in in-memory databases, so we continued with presentation about in-memory technologies and analytics. Students had questions about specific algorithms and we explained how they can be used on HCP with PAL.

At the end of the day, at 8 o’clock in the evening, Prof. Cardoso closed the event and we got big applauses.

As a summary, atmosphere was very friendly, students were eager to learn and they got a good introduction to HCP technologies. We hope that in the near future HCP will become integral part of their Cloud Computing course. We would like to thank Prof. Cardoso for the organization and support. Thanks also to the participants for their active engagement and for giving us 95% positive feedback.

Finally, one of their comments: “I found this CodeJam very interesting, and it is nice way for us students to get in touch with this technology. I'm looking forward to take advantage from this knowledge very soon, and of course to better explore this field.”
