After attending many SAP TechEd events in the EMEA region over the years, followed by my recent transfer to SAP’s offices in Singapore to shift my focus to the APJ region, I am very pleased to be writing about my very first SAP TechEd Bangalore experience. Exciting, vibrant, colourful India!  After surviving my taxi journey from the airport, I was very happy to be part of the largest IT event in India, with thousands of people in the auditorium, and another 380,000 online attendees (with that number expected to reach half a million before the end of the event). Community has always been key to SAP’s success, and with such a massive community that success will long continue.

The theme of the event is “Get in the Game!” and I am happy to report that I will be getting in the game by presenting on the second morning of SAP TechEd. My session is titled When People Are Depending on You, You Have to Depend on Your People, which is a review of the importance of measuring and improving user performance.

After collecting my precious speaker pass and t-shirts, and then having a wander around the venue, I was lucky enough to find a seat in the packed auditorium for Vishal Sikka’s keynote. He talked about being inspired by nature, and referred specifically to the importance of rivers in connecting people. Rivers have been a great platform for humanity connecting societies, allowing trade, transforming the world. So, what is the equivalent to the river when talking about software? The world has been transformed by software, and when we think about the nature of this transformation we realize that technology can amplify people, creating new forms of value. Technology can make users powerful. This empowerment and amplification of people is our central purpose.

As a long serving member of SAP Education, this last point particularly resonated with me. The empowerment and amplification of people is what SAP Education is all about. During SAP TechEd there will be many sessions with this aim in mind, including a number of sessions (like mine) being delivered by SAP Education staff. But what happens when SAP TechEd is over? I am fortunate enough to work in a business where empowerment and amplification of users is an every-day activity. So I aim to keep the SAP TechEd spirit alive, and take this spirit into my interactions with customers and partners across APJ.

I hope to see many of you at my presentation on Thursday, 12 December (8:15-9:15 am / L3), and we hope that you will take Vishal’s inspiration to heart and to continue to empower and amplify your people when the event is over. If you need further inspiration in terms of how you might achieve this, let me know!
