Background

I have the honour to present a community session at Las Vegas Teched which will focus on the way I built a geospatial application on the SAP HANA Cloud Platform. An overview of HCP (and non HCP) components I used for the application is shown below.

The application can analyses over 18 million crimes from 2011 to 2013 in England and Wales by Local Authority Government regions. A focus on open data allows me to map over 50,000 crimes over the 3 year period in the Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council area. The application runs entirely on the HCP. The session at Teched will cover how I built the application and share the lessons learnt.

High Level View

I will use the following diagram to show how I split building the application. First stages are to prepare and upload the data into the HCP. Then the focus is on creating the application to actually analyse and show the data on a map with the HCP.

What do I mean by Geospatial Topics?

I will cover the following

Geospatial Data

  • Data with location/geographic information such as co-ordinates

  • Relating to the relative position of things on the earth's surface

Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

  • Software that can capture, store, manipulate, analyse, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data

  • How to use GIS software to manipulate geospatial data to either analyse or display information on a map with the HANA Cloud Platform.

The main objective of the session is the following statement.

How to use GIS software to manipulate geospatial data to either analyse or display information on a map with the HANA Cloud Platform.

Also as an example for this blog, what can be learnt from mapping data?

I Went Looking for Las Vegas But Found Paradise!

As part of the session I do cover open data and how to use the data either directly in HANA or by running open source software such as GeoServer in the HCP. Obviously Google is your friend when it comes to searching and finding information on the internet but the focus is to use any open data with the HCP.

As an example I used Las Vegas as a search term to find data to map the location.I ended up using data from Mapzen which offer weekly data sets from Openstreetmap. This data has been loaded into and styled using a style sheet, downloaded from a GitHub repository, with GeoServer. As shown in the image below.

While mapping “Las Vegas” it became apparent I had actually found Paradise!

The research then led me to ask the question is Las Vegas really Las Vegas as I thought I knew it? I do not provide any answers in my session to that question  but I have read about an “unincorporated town”!  I wanted a map of Las Vegas but found a whole lot more information than I expected. Although I like the sound of Paradise, maybe downtown Paradise.

What I will cover is how I used two GIS programs called QGIS and (I have already mentioned) GeoServer to develop my crime application.

Using these two programs with SAP technology is possible as QGIS can be compatible with SQL Anywhere and GeoServer can run in the HCP.

Using QGIS and GeoServer with data from Openstreetmap, with default settings and free styles, I created the map below which to me indicates that the Teched venue is in Paradise  .

An image using the techniques with open data from my crime application is below which is all based on open data and running on the HCP. The image shows the region of Solihull’s bike crime data in a choropleth and marker cluster map. It was my choice to use an image of a bike to indicate bike parks and to highlight these against bike crime.

Is this session for you?

  • Do you have an interest in Geospatial topics or simply maps  ?
  • An interest in creating maps with open source software?
  • Do you have interest in the HANA Cloud Platform,  Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), HANA, XS (classic), deploying Java applications, Javascript map libraries, Mobile platform, Open Data or QRcodes?
  • Would you like to hear about a journey into the HCP platform to build an application that covers all of the above?
