Replay of "Deploying SAP HANA in Your Data Center", one of the Hands on HANA Webcast Series, is now available on-demand.

Go to this page to watch the replay.

Slides are available here.

Is HANA software only, or is it also the hardware?

SAP HANA is a software solution. The solution runs on certified HW that has been optimized to run SAP HANA.

Is there any minimum time period for deployment?

Deployment times always depend on scope of project. However, we have seen some rapid deployments, taking only weeks, leveraging our SAP Rapid Deployment Solutions (RDS). You can find some examples on our SAPHANA.com website.

Can we install SAP Business Objects in the same server of HANA?

No, you cannot install SAP Business Objects on the HANA server.

So that means we cannot install it on another mount point?

You will have to install SAP Business Objects applications/services on a physical hardware different from the HANA server.

What is info cube?

It’s a term used in the Business Warehouse/Business Intelligence world. An info cube is a multi-dimensional database construct typically modeled in a BW like SAP BW. You use it to model your data for OLAP reporting. In SAP HANA, the old-BW-world ”info cubes” are represented by the so-called ”Analytic Views”.

Does it support point in time recovery?

Yes, SAP HANA has been supporting point-in-time recovery since HANA SPS03 (published Nov 2011).

I understand we can have mirroring of the persistent layer. But does HANA have capability of mirroring at memory level?

SAP HANA provides a functionality called ”HANA System Replication”. Using that, you would have an alternative to ”Storage-based Replication” which is storage-vendor-specific by its nature.

What is TMS?

It’s IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager.

What is scale up and scale out?

Scale-up means that you increase the memory (RAM) of your HANA server until it provides enough space to hold your database. With scale-up, you’d have only one HANA server in a given HANA system. It’s also called ”Single-node HANA system”.

Scale-out means that you increase the overall memory for your database by adding additional HANA servers. Those servers would be called the ”nodes” of a ”HANA scale-out solution”.

What is GPFS?

General Parallel File System, commercial file system by IBM.

Will the IP address of the primary HANA be switched to secondary site with Warm Standby?

This can be achieved with the help of virtual IP addresses which move from the primary host(s) to the standby or shadow host(s) of SAP HANA System Replication.

What is the performance on the failover?

The so-called Recovery Time Objective (+time to recover from outage) with Host Auto Failover is lower compared to Backup&Restore but higher than with HANA System Replication. The exact numbers depend on the size of the DB part covered by that node. [Update] ~20 mins for Host Auto Failover.

From what SP of HANA is the asynchronous DR generally available?

From HANA SPS06 (published end of June 2013).

Is both asynch/sync option available for business continuity?

Yes, since HANA SPS06 (published in June 2013) you have both options available.

How do we prevent transaction lost on high speed transactions during failover operations?

HANA regularly stores data savepoints in the data volume of the storage (default is each 5 minutes). Between 2 savepoints redo logs are written to the log volume whenever a transaction changes the DB. As those redo logs are written sequentially keeping their original order, one can always restore the in-memory DB after a failover from the latest savepoint plus the redo logs stored since then.

Can you please repeat the number of the next certification level? 126 nodes?

We are expecting to go to 128 nodes in the near future although we do not really have any restrictions today.

Approximately how long it takes to implement SAP HANA on a BI existing?

If you want to migrate an SAP BW from a traditional DB to SAP HANA, you most likely will have to upgrade your BW system first. Experience shows that that upgrade part takes the longest in the overall HANA migration procedure. You can significantly reduce that upgrade time by applying the so-called ”Database Migration Option (DMO)” offered by SAP’s ”Software Logistics Toolset”.

What is the time for Sep 17 Webinar,"High Availability and Disaster Recovery with SAP HANA"?

The webinar will be at the same time as today (8am PT/ 11am ET). You can register for the webinar at: http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-44744

Where can we register for the event on Sep. 17th?

You can register for any of the Hands-On HANA sessions on the SAP Community Network.

Where can we post questions beforehand about Sep. 17th?

You can post your questions before the webinar here.
