Varian Medical Systems, a leading manufacturer of medical devices and software  treating over 250,000 patients a day with 6500 employees with global headquarter  in Palo Alto (CA) recently announced a successful Go-Live on SAP ECC Business Suite on HANA with implementation partner KPIT.

Varian has a Global SAP footprint running numerous SAP applications with complex and custom processes across all ECC modules/ Lines of Business but in particular for Revenue Recognition with Sales & Distribution and Project Systems, while facing overall performance challenges on ECC.

The large amount of customizations were an area of scrutiny during the evaluation process which included a POC to evaluate the HANA Technology through an SLT ‘Side Car’ approach with code pushdown for the selected Use Case around Revenue Forecasting. The ‘Side Car’ approach option was considered for production but Varian saw enough value in the full ECC Business Suite on HANA database migration.

Subsequently various implementation partners were evaluated including based on the POC results in the system integrators’ own HANA lab, resulting in the selection of KPIT( http://www.kpit.com/HANA) as the preferred system integrator.

Some key figures from the migration: KPIT upgraded Varian’s ECC instance from ECC6.0 to ECC6.0 EhP 7.0, an Oracle database size of 1.9TB (HANA database 700GB) while “HANAtizing” code for the HANA production environment, fully replacing the incumbent Oracle database in RECORD TIME, 6 Hours Ahead of Schedule on May 10th 2014!

Varian is focused on IT innovations that can deliver business value and improve customer satisfaction. For instance, our need to improve revenue forecasting and global sales order processing has been a top priority. That’s why we considered SAP Suite on HANA. It will not only boost application performance but deliver a platform for business process innovation. We have engaged with KPIT and leveraged their HANA tools and expertise, to successfully go-live with Suite on HANA migration. With the recent go-live, we are already experiencing improved performance of our application. The ECC component of the Revenue Forecasting Report that used to take 90 minutes, now it takes 15 minutes. The new platform will enable us to run applications faster and leverage new innovations coming out from SAP e.g. Smart financials, cash management, engineering product cost estimate etc.
