Through the first week of May in Orlando, Florida, software giant SAP showcased current and future solutions targeted to improve Industries, Lines of Businesses and Advanced Technology applications.  While the primary focal point of the event was the developments in Big Data applications and platforms to Support SAP HANA, what became quickly clear was the actual client applications and the utilization of HANA to address real world issues garnered the most attention; Perhaps none more importantly than within the Healthcare industry.

SAP Client applications ran the gamut of improving business process, to improving people’s lives.  More specifically, clients outlined how HANA and the efficiency in analysis drove significant revenue gains with integrated financial management with Simple Finance, to the utilization of HANA for Medical Research Insights and robust data analytics.

A show like Sapphire is often expected to be a showcase; A showcase for all the “new” and the “neat,” in line with events such as the International
Consumer Electronics Show.  Events like Sapphire are also to highlight groundbreaking partnerships such as those announced with SAP and Facebook, Google, and  Walmart.

In line with major announcements, but perhaps with less Brand identification and recognition, SAP outlined the evolving partnerships with both the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg, Germany, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Alexandria, Virginia.

There are 14 million new cancer patients diagnosed every year globally.  Unfortunately, one of the great challenges in Oncology is that only one third of the chemotherapeutic treatments are effective due to unique tumor and patient factors.  Imagine you have a large database in the cloud with millions of patient records can search in this database real-time to find a similar group of patients who have been treated for the same illness.  Physicians can outline better
treatment choices based on those patients’ outcomes.

Enter organizations such as NCT and ASCO.

Quite simply NCT and ASCO are leveraging the power of HANA to accelerate cancer research, to develop co-operative research channels for information sharing, with the goal of streamlining cancer treatment and the search for a cure.

NCT was featured in SAP Co-Founder Hasso Plattner’s keynote address: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vYg2u6wvOQ

SAP develops software and solutions – but together with strategic partners like NCT and ASCO, these cooperative programs can truly change lives.

Software, technology and gadgets are cool.  Accelerating a cure for Cancer is awe inspiring.
