In a recent partnership announcement, SAP and Apple share their vision of how the two companies are going to revolutionize the mobile work experience for enterprise customers of all sizes, combining iPhone and iPad apps with the capabilities of the SAP HANA Cloud platform.

One of the industries this partnership will initially focus on is healthcare, because it is the sector with a natively mobile workforce where a seamless end to end digital experience can go as far as saving lives.

The Journal of Neurology examined the impact of iPad mini tablets running the SAP Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Unwired app on ward round performance. According to the study, enterprise mobility reduced the time for checking medical records by 40% during preparation and post-processing of ward rounds. Valuable time that healthcare professionals can spend with patients, instead of looking for documents and transcribing information.

Berlin’s Charité, Europe’s largest and among the leading university hospitals on the continent, was one of the early adopters of the SAP EMR Unwired app. Watch this video to see how the software enables doctors to document results faster, reduce manual data capturing, and access patient information in real-time.

Through the SAP and Apple partnership, developers can leverage a specific software development kit (the SAP HANA Cloud Platform SDK for iOS) to quickly build powerful, native apps for iPhone and iPad, as well as benefit from the SAP Academy for iOS that delivers tools and training for SAP’s vast developer community around the world. In addition, powerful native iOS apps will bring innovative ways for iPhone and iPad users to manage critical business operations running on SAP.

“We are extraordinarily excited about the promise of the Apple and SAP alliance,” said Martin Peuker, Associate CIO Charité and IT Director Berlin Institute of Health. “This partnership will build on our foundation of co-innovation and patient care impact, and extend what is possible with SAP EMR Unwired on iOS devices. We look forward to holistically transforming patient engagement and clinical research together to advance precision medicine.”

Empowering healthcare professionals by freeing up time and giving them vital information at their hands is one step towards creating more value for patients. Engaging patients to take an active role in managing their health is another step.

The following examples give an impression of mobile apps that patients on the one side and caregivers on the other side could use in a post hospital discharge monitoring scenario.
