Varian Medicals Systems is a manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiotherapy, radiosurgery, proton therapy, and brachytherapy; supplying informatics software for managing cancer clinics and medical oncology practices. Varian Medical Systems’ mission is to focus energy on saving lives.

In the ASUG Annual conference at SAPPHIRE, Orlando, Manish Das – Senior IT Manager at Varian Medicals shared HANA Journey and how it added value to business through process improvement.

Some of the key highlights of the session

Varian Medicals treats over 100K patients/day with their devices.  Varian had revenues around $3.1B in FY2014with over 60 sales/support offices globally. It has over 6500 employees with manufacturing sites in North America, China and Europe.

Business Challenge: Along with integration and process improvements, focus was in the three critical areas : Performance, Analytics and Usability.

Varian started the journey with the HANA Proof-of-concept to validate the performance improvements for the ECC processes and the BI first layer. They were amazed to find a significant improvements that reduced the 2.5+ hours process to under 4 minutes.  By enabling in-memory database, Varian realized significant improvement (up to 1500X) of their transaction processing time including their own custom development.

Varian used SAP CDMC (Custom Development Management Cockpit) tool to analyze custom code and implement code corrections to ease the migration to Suite on HANA. 

Varian also shared some of insights from their Fiori applications such as Purchase Requisition, MRP applications, Timecard Entry & Approval.

Other benefits highlighted included

  • Reduced number of systems, standardized operating systems
  • Move from UNIX to AIX is helping them in asynchronous replication and DR (Recovery Time Objective from 48H to 4H and Recovery Point Objective from 24H to 1H)
