The team took then Erika's perspective and redefined the generic challenge as follow:

“How to provide and access the necessary information in the more intuitive and less time consuming manner to concentrate on scientific activities?”

The exploration of the problem space showed that Erika was simply willing to concentrate her thoughts to do Research and use less time as possible in research management and reporting that was however a mandatory task in her role to secure sufficient funding for her team.

How to achieve this goal became the main worry of the team and the ideas were captured thanks to a lean canvas in a entrepreneur oriented way.

Lean Canvas

The Canvas framework and its instantiation are shown above and the different section are summarized below:

  • Problem
    • Time-consuming

    • Receiver specific compilation/formats

    • Changing guidelines / Frequent reporting

    • Spending approval / Specific planning (monthly)

    • Data Sources

    • Data silos (HR especially)

    • Excel with inconsistent data /

  • Solution
    • Magic project data connector
    • Normative reporting formats
    • One stop info shopping
    • Real time role based collaborative access
    • No data replication
  • Key Activity
    • Process task map
    • Easy screen
  • Unfair advantage
    • Smart reuse of data
    • The Data you WANT in the format you NEED
  • Customer Segment
    • Researcher
    • Funders
    • Administrators

The Unique Value Proposition is to propose a Fast Intuitive Easy way to achieve Research administration at your fingertips, the idea is to capture all data necessary and to provide reports capitalizing on the previous reports while integrating uptodate data coming from different components.

Prototyping

The team alpha highlighted the need of a ‘one stop’ tool, enabling to interact with SAP components  (HR, GM, FI, PPM…) but also non-SAP tools (eg. internal/3rd party tool, website, funding organisations) thanks to ‘magic’ connectors in a role based fashion (eg. the info presented to researcher, project lead, admin …  should be adapted to their understanding and usage) and should enable formal and informal smooth collaboration. Since funded research project management is nowadays part of the researcher daily life the tool should enable project follow-up and multi-purpose reporting including financial, management and research artefacts.
