In this week's edition I'd like to spotlight two shipments of binaries. First one, the 7.20 EXT kernel, covers all platforms but has some IBM i specifics to talk about. Second one is a patch for saposcol, which addresses some nasty features.

7.20 EXT Kernel

As announced in SAP note 1553300, SAP started to ship the new 7.20 EXT kernel as an alternative kernel to run SAP EhP2 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0, SAP NetWeaver 7.20, and SAP NetWeaver 7.30. Installation, usage and platform specifics are described in  SAP note 1553301

Navigation to the binaries on the Service Marketplace is in complete analogy with the old kernel, see here the path for the Unicode version when browsing the Download Catalog of the Support Packages and Patches area:

Additional Components -> SAP Kernel -> SAP KERNEL 64-BIT UNICODE -> SAP KERNEL 7.20 EXT 64-BIT UC

Installation of the new kernel is as simple as can be on IBM i. Having downloaded the binaries, stopped the system and SAProuter and deleted the statistics file it is reduced to a single call of APYSIDKRN with no explicit extraction of any additional archives.

Regarding SAP on IBM i the reference to the Product Availability Matrix translates to the simple fact that this kernel can be run on IBM i 7.1 and higher, whilst the original 7.20 kernel can be run on OS releases higher than V5R3.

saposcol

A new version of saposcol addresses some problems you may have seen during monitoring of your system: Heavy CPU load on the server may have led to wrong information regarding CPU load in the monitoring tools in the past. There were also some inconsistencies in the display of virtual CPUs and of disk wait and service times. Find details and the solution in SAP note 1591372.

Stay tuned...

As the development team intends to maintain a consistent format, editions of the series will continue to be published on my name. Set feeds accordingly if you are interested in following the series.
