Welcome at the SAP on IBM i update! This time I point to a presentation about kernel enhancements for SAP on IBM i and to a note which may help you save some resources in spool file handling.

Kernel enhancements

A few days ago a presentation occurred in the article library of All Articles on Landscape Design and Architecture, which gives a rough overview of the improvements the SAP on i team put into the kernel over the last years.

Most important from my perspective is a shift in the paradigm of what is the source of the SAP kernel on IBM i. Whilst in earlier releases until 7.00 the whole kernel was created from a native library, it nowadays emerges from file system objects. This way kernel logistics is much more aligned to what SAP platforms in common are set up and is taking big advantage from that as we now can support the sapcpe concept. In SAP on IBM DB2 for i - Update week 30 2011 I already elaborated on command APYSIDKRN, which e.g. reduces installation of a new kernel from formerly two steps (load and apply kernel) to one. Give it a glimpse...

Spool file handing

Spool files are created at the end of a job. As long as they stay in the system they can be looked up by searching for this job. This requires the system to keep basic information about this job, which allocates a certain amount of system resources growing over time. Have a look at SAP note 1626434 to learn how to decouple spool files from this job information and to free the corresponding resources.

Stay tuned...

As the development team intends to maintain a consistent format, editions of the series will continue to be published on my name. Set feeds accordingly if you are interested in following the series.
