More than a trillion sensors will have been deployed in the not too distant future, many of them as an integral part of machinery. This represents one of the largest Big Data opportunities that smart organizations can leverage to their advantage.

The example below shows that sensors can easily generate massive amounts of data that can provide valuable real-time information if handled correctly.


One of the best examples of using sensor data is in the business area of predictive maintenance. In this case, sensor data are being used to predict potential problems with a machine (or even failure). Taking immediate action can extend the lifetime of the machine and will help keep up-time as high as possible, thereby reducing cost.

Another example of leveraging sensor data is about agricultural machinery, in which case sensor data can be used to determine the optimal time to harvest. In this case, the business value is not cost reduction, but revenue growth, because the crops will be sold at the highest possible price.
