The Internet of things!

For me one of the most ingesting topics in the IT industry at the moment, but a lot of people find it hard to see practical application. Many people interact with IoT everyday and are unaware they are doing so.

So I thought I'd take a look into the future of our daily lives and predict what our working day might be like in A future connected office.

Let's start with the the ID card, we arrive at the office and we use our card to enter the car park, this simple swipe of card tells us that your are in the office today. This is information and its information that can be used!

Let's take it a step further, every time we head down to lunch, we swipe our card over the reader above the meal we choose, this is great information that can lead to multiple opportunities. Over time this data could be used to inform us once we've checked in to the building that our favourite meal is being served today, it will also allow the canteen to review what lunch is popular. Going back a few steps, the canteen could also monitor the number of employees checked into the building to ensure they produce the right amount of food, and the predicited quantites of each meal based on peoples favourite for that day.

So we've looked at how we can adapt to provide an IoT ready workplace without any additional involvement for you, but let's imagine on your induction you are given an monitoring wristband, Fitbit or a jawbone for example, and asked to wear it when coming into the office. This device could provide the company with information to know when you may need a coffee, a break or perform a calculation to ensure the temperature of the area you are in is suitable across all in that area.

How about an interactive desk that is brought to life by your palm face down on the surface, this could then not only let colleagues know you in the office but also at what hot desk you are sitting.

There are hundreds of ways our future office life will be effected by things connected to other things that eventually connect to the Internet, this is just food for thought on where we may be in the coming years, im sure in practice it will all be very different!

I'd be really intrested to know how you think your office will be effected in the coming years and what cool things will soon be connected for better use
