The Internet of Things and Services
It is being discussed that we are going to witness the next phase of Industrial revolution with IoT (Internet of Things). The revolution has already been named Industry 4.0
Imagine this simple scenario;
You have the “Pureit” Water Purifier in your home; hence you are a CUSTOMER of HUL. All these days, you were to manually observe the battery level in this machine and make call to an agent who then arranges to replace the battery kit. What happens if you fail to observe the battery level and your machine stopped filtering water?
Now, all of a sudden, you get a call from HUL helpline, informing you that it’s time for your battery kit replacement and if they can initiate replacement process for the same. Would you be happy?
YES of course. Who would NOT be happy!!!!
This is one simple example of what Internet of Things can achieve in our day to day life. To give you another example, a person who has undergone heart transplantation or any other major surgery needs to be monitored even after the patient is discharged from hospital. How can the nearest relative or hospital authorities get to know if there are any variations in patient condition which may require immediate attention?
All these can be achieved by IoT. So what is IoT?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable it to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to interoperate within the existing Internet infrastructure. Typically, IoT is expected to offer advanced connectivity of devices, systems, and services that connects anything (living or non-living) to a machine to form a smart grid.
So what will IoT bring us?
What solutions does SAP have with regard to IoT?
SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service
I guess the best industry to implement this solution would be Power Generation (Nuclear) and Healthcare. I believe the concept of Corrective maintenance can be eliminated to a very great extent.
With SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service, you can analyze large volumes of operational data and apply predictive insights in real time – for the foresight you need to increase asset availability and satisfaction level.
SAP Connected Logistics
The SAP Connected Logistics Cloud solution is a business network for logistics that allows hub operators and others to monitor traffic towards and within a hub in real time, and facilitate communication between all involved parties that even don’t necessarily have a direct business relationship.

SAP Connected Manufacturing
Internet of Things (IoT) will bring revolutionary change to society, economy, and technology. Manufacturing companies are using IoT to completely automate their production process.
Germany could be first of the countries to effectively kick off Industry4.0
SAP Augmented Reality Apps
SAP Augmented Reality Apps untether your backend systems so you can work hands-free – in the office or in the field. This product has been designed to use visual enterprise 3D models, voice recognition, and gesture control while on the job. Access business processes and information from a wearable device for ultimate convenience and productivity.
SPA has built 2 solutions with this app;
This solution is designed for large warehouse where the picker will be wearing glass which will provide him all data to pick products in an optimized manner. Imagine if this glass could also scan a barcode to display the HU information.
This solution is designed for Service Technician (let’s assume a guy from Boeing) to do a complicated repair work (say on an aircraft engine). The Augmented Reality Apps will provide him with the detailed drawing of the engine in his wearable device. The device could also provide him with detailed steps to carry out the repair.
