Previous Blog: from Things to Outcomes with the SAP Internet of Things Platform - the SAP IoT Client

The SAP Internet of Things Platform Foundation (Center) provides capabilities of data ingestion of raw sensor (thing) data, big data abilities to manipulate huge data volumes and data integration with enterprise software systems (action) to provide the ability to create end to end IoT solutions for businesses to leverage and drive the right outcome.

Data Ingestion

This is the set of capabilities of smart data streaming and remote data synchronization including SIM management capabilities related to connectivity management.

Smart Data Streaming

Smart data streaming is typically the entry point for “thing” data into the central system.  Smart data streaming provides a highly scalable ingestion point, capable of receiving and processing millions of messages per second. It goes beyond just capturing data.  The real value lies in the ability to apply processing logic and streaming analytics to the incoming data in real-time, as fast as it arrives, to generate alerts, initiate a response to changing conditions, to transform or enrich the data, and even to decide which data to store and where to store it. It is built up of a group of REST and Web Socket interfaces with plans to support Kafka in the future.

Remote Data Synch

Remote data synchronization, better known as RDSync, provides bi-directional data transfer, with transactional integrity, between HANA at the center and SQL Anywhere at the edge and offers powerful capabilities to support data synchronization between the edge and the center. One of the more powerful capabilities is the ability to go offline and resynch when the connection is available without any data loss.

SIM Management

SAP has included a management tool called IoT SIM Management, designed to analyze, manage and optimize connectivity costs for all SIM-based devices. This tool allows for the ability to support and manage global IoT deployments.

Big Data

Let‘s talk a little about data storage.  In simple terms, we all like to talk about the analytics power of the HANA in-memory database, but let‘s face it, when we start talking about IoT, we‘re talking gobs of data. I mean lots and lots and lots of gobs of data. So much data that in many practical cases, storing all that data in-memory is really not an option. Nor is it necessary.

Dynamic Tiering

This allows for disk-based extended tables in HANA for “warm” (mid-tier) storage to keep “medium value” data in HANA, but not in-memory

VORA

VORA is the way into Hadoop to give the SAP IoT platform the capability to offer up a data lake, a vast reservoir of low-cost “cold” data storage. VORA allows for in-memory analysis of massive amounts of historical data in a Hadoop data lake and allows SAP HANA to integrate with Hadoop.

Plans around the SAP IoT Platform foundation offering include providing enhanced analytics capabilities, rapid application development, management and security.

SAP hopes that this blog has provided you a good sense of what to expect in the SAP Internet of Things Platform – Foundation for Private Cloud at the center of an IoT deployment. In case you have further questions then please feel free to leave a comment seeking clarification or start a Q&A thread in the discussion section of the <SAP Solutions for the Internet of Things> community.

SAP would like to thank you for your time and attention.
