Looking at the current discussions around IoT inside and outside SAP I will work on an overview of scenarios discussed within Discrete Manufacturing.
This is a Blog post reflecting my personal ideas and I will not only cover scenarios alread realized but also put some ideas on the table. No all of them are 'ready to implement', the should help you to understand the idea of IoT and to discuss possible scenarios with your customer.

Maintenance optimization in Energy & Natural Resources
Monitor equipment in remote locations. This will help you to avoid emergency activities to get needed replacement to regions where only limited transport/repair capacity is available.
Benefit : Bring replacement machinery in with planned transports. Emergency repair at remote locations will cause costly hiring of transport capacity and staff and sometimes even not possible due to logistic limitations (Drilling platform, road quality, oversea transport with delays)

Operation excellence in Energy & Natural Resources
Most important case in this industrie is the fullfilment of orders. So in case of a breakdown (or outage due to planned maintenance) of a pump in an oilfield you want to know is this pump is required to fulfill planned orders. If this is the case the repair will be done even if undplanned and scheduled on request. This will avoid penaties. In case you have no tanker to load, or you can substitute from storage locations or using other sources, you want to check the implication of the missing pump and decide casewise if you have an urgent need for repair. Or if you can shout down the pump and wait for the next repair cycle.
Benefit : Only do repairs if really required. Do not sent equipment to remote locations using expensive emergency procedures if there is no urgent need
Example : A pump is down on a drilling platform in the Nort Sea while the boat is already on its way. Parts have to be flown in by Helicopter or sent by another boat, possibly parts have to be sent from abroad. And what to do if there is unpleasant weather ?
