I am a fan of old movies, and much to my delight, “The Graduate” was playing on television last night. The film tells the story of Benjamin Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman), a recent university graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), and then proceeds to fall in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross). In 1967, this movie was quite risqué for its time.
There is a famous line in the film, when Benjamin is taken aside by one of his parent’s friends, who gives him some unsolicited career advice: “I have one word for you... PLASTICS.” Now, you might remember other aspects of this film – the clandestine rendezvous between Benjamin and the sultry Mrs. Robinson, her beautiful and radiant daughter, Elaine, or the great soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel. Or, you might be too young to have seen or even heard of this movie. If so, then you are too young to remember a world without mobile phones, the internet, iTunes, and Google – a world where “plastics” was the hot technology of the day.
Those days are long past, and technology has moved light years beyond the days of pay phones, paper street maps, and real metal hotel keys. Today’s young Benjamin or Elaine, might very well be taken aside by an earnest adult, and given this unsolicited career advice – “I have one word for you – ANALYTICS”.
Yes, data analytics, and particularly Big Data analytics – is one of the hottest technologies around today.
