I am a fan of old movies, and much to my delight, “The Graduate” was playing on television last night.   The film tells the story of Benjamin Braddock (played by Dustin Hoffman), a recent university graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), and then proceeds to fall in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).  In 1967, this movie was quite risqué for its time.

There is a famous line in the film, when Benjamin is taken aside by one of his parent’s friends, who gives him some unsolicited career advice:  “I have one word for you... PLASTICS.”  Now, you might remember other aspects of this film – the clandestine rendezvous between Benjamin and the sultry Mrs. Robinson, her beautiful and radiant daughter, Elaine, or the great soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel.  Or, you might be too young to have seen or even heard of this movie.  If so, then you are too young to remember a world without mobile phones, the internet, iTunes, and Google – a world where “plastics” was the hot technology of the day.

Those days are long past, and technology has moved light years beyond the days of pay phones, paper street maps, and real metal hotel keys.  Today’s young Benjamin or Elaine, might very well be taken aside by an earnest adult, and given this unsolicited career advice – “I have one word for you – ANALYTICS”.

Yes, data analytics, and particularly Big Data analytics – is one of the hottest technologies around today.  With mobile phones and tablets, email, internet commerce, social media, and machine generated data – the world is engulfed in data – more data than you can imagine.  This data provides a wealth of opportunities for new business insights – provided you have the technology to capture huge volumes of data, mine and analyze it, and visualize it to acquire those insights.  IQ has been a solid big data analytics platform for a long time, with a mature column store and Hadoop integration for data volume, in-database analytics for data velocity, full text search for data variety, and a unique shared everything MPP architecture for optimal use of compute resources that mitigates the costs of Big Data.  IQ 16 is taking big data analytics to a whole new level that that can handle petabytes of data, with low latency data loads, massively scaled out queries, and enhanced security and robustness.  Here are some of the key improvements that IQ 16 brings to the table:

•      Re-engineered column store for even more extreme data compression

•      Faster data loading in three ways: fully parallelized bulk loading; fast and predictable incremental batch loading; and a new write optimized delta store designed for low latency, concurrent writes to the same database table

•      Enhanced query engine for more aggressive scale out performance across a Multiplex grid

•      More resilient Multiplex that continues query processing in the face of network interrupts and server failures

•      LDAP authentication and RBAC authorization for better security

•      Completely web-based administration and monitoring for easy access and control

We are confident you will be excited about this new release of IQ, and its ability to tackle your Big Data challenges.  To learn more: http://www.dbta.com/Articles/Editorial/News-Flashes/SAP-Sybase-IQ-16-Takes-on-Petabyte-Scale-Data-Wa...
