As a diversion from Solution Manager news this month the following is a quick overview of the Sapphire Keynotes. HANA was the key message along with Mobile and a new front-end; Fiori - Italian for flowers.

The day one Keynote from Bill McDermott introduced the 25th Sapphire with 25,000 attending and 80,000 online viewers. Starting with the mobile theme he went into how the Millennial's (1980 – 1995 18 to 33) will be the first generation (2 billion consumers) born into the mobile device. Next explained how HANA can access companies internal “dark data” and provide Business to Business to Consumer engagement; fast. Then moved on to machine to machine analytics and Security, one major Bank defends 10M hack attacks a day. The message is to become smart, fast and secure. User experience is now top priority. Moved onto the sport theme with introduction of James Brown (JB) host of NFL today on CBS.  Now we know why SAP has become so heavily involved in sports – Bill had a great day with his farther at Shea Stadium watching Football!

In the day two Keynote Jim Hagemann Snabe entertained with a summary of the competitive business environment as being “either at the table, or on the table”. He then introduced Ron Dennis to the stage, from the McLaren Formula One team, to talk about how HANA is influencing F1. He also announced the official release of Business Suite (ECC) on HANA followed by how SAP was now bench marking against the consumer user experience - See SAP Fiori for the new touch enabled apps. Final message was that by moving data in-memory, all systems to the Cloud and attention on the end user there was an opportunity for SAP customers to take a quantum leap forward in their businesses.

Day three Keynote (2 hours) from SAP founder Hasso Plattner re-iterated mobile and end user experience. He then covered the characteristics of Cloud based Solutions – SaaS license like leasing a car, you will pay more over time. Multi-tenancy ok for small homogenous business but large companies still don’t want to share software and data. Ability to deploy quickly and upgrade easily will reduce cost of labor. Cloud  applications not really different, still 3 tier architecture – just written in last 5 years whereas some of SAP’s screens are over 10 years old (this will change soon - Fiori). Next was Hasso’s dig at Oracle and HANA myths. Every day he does a Google search for SAP vs Oracle. Some of the myths: not possible to do virtualization (Runs on AWS – virtualized), needs 100% of data in Ram, uses proprietary hardware, does not support multi-tenancy (SF, BYD), is disruptive to business, is not ready for prime time and is only good for SAP applications (60% use-cases outside of SAP). Wrapped up with demos of two applications (Dynamic caching and analysis of 4 billion POS records) on HANA developed by PHD students from the Hasso Plattner Institute. There is the usual live demo drama!

Dr Vishal Sikka then took the stage with the theme of Math, Design & the HANA platform. He outlined the need for change and the journey to renew SAP from the user experience backwards. This project resulted in Fiori. Then showed some end user demos of Fiori and also announced development partnership with Google Chrome/Android and the HTML5 based Fiori apps. HP unveiled its Kraken (Clash of the Titians) server (240core CPU and 12 Terabyte DRAM). He then went on to acknowledge the strong co-innovation of the HANA enterprise cloud with partners (IBM, Cisco, Intel etc) versus Oracle buying a failed hardware company to achieve the same. Announced HANA One Premium. Demoed new innovation in Manufacturing; Real-Time Postponement in MRP run combined with 3D printing. Next was “buying signals” within 5 petabytes of data at E-bay. Finally Adobe demoed the Adobe Marketing Cloud combined with HANA to show how marketers can interact in real time. Wrapped up with HANA is a big girl now and has graduated!
