Welcome to the February Solution Manager update. This month I am starting with a safety share. Two weeks ago I had a mountain bike accident that resulted in a 10 day stay in hospital. I have had time to reflect on what caused the accident and how it could have been avoided. My recollection was that I began a steep descent travelling too fast and lost control (went over the handle bars). Rather than rushing into the descent I should have paused at the top and taken time to evaluate the terrain and selected the safest route down. The learning is: slow down and plan!

This got me thinking about how often we see Solution Manager implementations that are not delivering the expected benefits. These implementations have often been driven by a short term requirement such as providing a repository for the Business Process Documentation.  Once the project has finished, if the Business Process Repository isn’t integrated into the life-cycle of ongoing changes, the Documentation becomes out dated. In order to avoid this situation it makes sense to pause and evaluate the requirements for the full life-cycle of the Documentation. Once this evaluation has been completed a “Roadmap” of the required functionality and a plan can be developed to ensure the Business Process Documentation is kept up to date on an ongoing basis. As in the case of my bike accident, slow down and plan.
