As organizational complexity grows, unexpected impacts even from routine changes can add to the challenge of managing change. Disruptions can increase as business needs drive increased system complexity. A change can pass quality testing with flying colors and seem ready to promote, but that can be far from the end of it on complex systems.

If you maintain multiple landscapes, you may be running multiple processes using both SAP-native ABAP and non-native Java stacks, with applications perhaps partly managed remotely through Web portals. In such a case, you can’t test a change in isolation and have confidence in your results. You need to know in advance what impacts a change will have as its effects promulgate through systems after promotion.

That’s easier said than done, although today there are very effective tools in the SAP ecosystem that can analyze the effects that proposed changes will have in every corner of a complex SAP landscape. Such technology can tell you in advance what other objects will feel the impact of a change promoted into production and result in a dramatic reduction in application lifecycle related costs, better quality and reduced risk.

Integrating analysis technology with change control automation enables users of SAP software to accurately assess, in advance, the effects throughout their information systems of all proposed changes, no matter how small. The two technologies work together to create a single, integrated process for teams dealing with complex landscapes. This results in improved productivity and enhanced testing phase quality, because object identification is automated and enforced via the Rev-Trac change request. The integrated process tells you what to test before you approve promotion. The analysis technology lists all of the potentially impacted objects, and by testing them you get much better success at ensuring that both a change and its impacts are thoroughly tested and its effects known in advance. By combining Rev-Trac change control with intelligent ALM analysis software, customers not only realize enhanced automation and management of crucial IT processes, but they save time, money and resources as they strategically maximize the value of their investments in SAP software.
